6 reviews in a month, not bad. There’s been some okay stuff here, some GotY-level stuff too.
I do have a bunch of reviews incoming too. SaGa Frontier Remastered, Nier Replicant, Smelter, and a bunch of other stuff probably. I think I’ll be busy with reviews for a bit still, I’m really not running out of games to play that’s for sure. Plus MHR is coming back for more with the 2.0 update.
So anyways, this month I’m highlighting: 7 multiplats, 4 Switch releases, a PC release and a PS5 port of an old Switch game. It’s a pretty quiet month but there’s certainly some interesting games there. It’s the calm before the June storm.
Disclaimer: I only list games that I think are worth mentioning. This includes games I’m personally interested in, games that will likely be popular, highly advertised games, small interesting ones I may notice and such. And of course I can’t see the future, so I may be missing games and I may be listing games that may get delayed.
MULTIPLATFORM RELEASES
Save me Mr Tako: Definitive Edition 05/05 (Switch, PC)
This was a fun little game boy-style game previously published by Nicalis. I guess there were issues with the publisher at some point, and it was removed from Steam and the Nintendo eshop. And now it’s coming back but self-published, so away from the apparent tyranny of Nicalis, but there’s some control and gameplay improvements. So if you missed it before, this is a good occasion to get it. Unfortunately you don’t get this version as an update if you had the original version, but that makes sense considering the publisher change.
Resident Evil Village 05/07 (PC, PS4, Xbone, PS5, Xbox X/S)
It’s a new Resident Evil. That series got much better once it got out of that weird RE5/RE6 action funk, and tried actually being horror/puzzle again. This one looks like it should be a good time. And it has that one tall vampire waifu everyone is (understandably) hyped about. And it has Mercenaries mode. Pretty much expecting this to be one of the big hype games this year, so I’m quite interested in seeing how people will like this one. I won’t play it myself but I’ll be looking into it.
Mass Effect: Legendary Edition 05/14 (PC, PS4, Xbone)
Here you have a bad remaster of a great game and its 2 disappointing sequels that forgot the first one was an RPG. Why are they even releasing this worse-looking version? It’s not even coming to PS5 and Series X natively. What is the point? Just get it on PC and find some good mods or something.
Knockout City 05/21 (Switch, PC, PS4, Xbone, PS5, Xbox X/S)
I doubt anyone will play this. It’s a multiplayer arena dodgeball game of sorts, it doesn’t look good. And it’s EA. So it’s very ignorable. It’s notable for a trailer in the last Nintendo Direct that had all these varied characters in different graphic styles from different kinds of (fictional) games, and then they showed the actual game and it had fuck-all to do with the characters we were previously shown. What a weird way to announce a game, by showing things that have nothing to do with it.
Shin Megami Tensei III Nocturne HD 05/25 (Switch, PC, PS4)
SMT3 is the good shit. If you haven’t played this before, do it now. It’s a badass JRPG that will kick your ass if you don’t git gud… fast. I wonder how many victims Matador will claim. There’s also really stupid overpriced DLC that is basically things that should just be in the game in the first place… not like you should be playing a game like this in easy mode.
Biomutant 05/25 (PC, PS4, Xbone)
I don’t quite know what this is, I feel like I’ve seen this on preorder for a long time. It’s a pretty cool-looking action game where you play as various small animals and such, with apparently a lot of different combat and gameplay styles. Looks interesting, I kinda need to see more of it but I know a few people who are hyped for this.
Earth Defense Force World Brothers 05/27 (Switch, PC, PS4)
It looks like regular EDF, but with voxels. I dunno, it’s probably fine? Because it’s EDF? I don’t care too much about this one.
SWITCH RELEASES
Famicom Detective Club: The Missing Heir and Famicom Detective Club: The Girl Who Stands Behind 05/21
These are 2 classic Famicom (NES) games that never made it outside of Japan. They’re adventure murder mystery games that were pretty popular. This is super updated versions, so you have anime cutscenes and really nice HD graphics and stuff. It looks super good. Each games is 40-something dollars in Canadia, so it’s not too bad. There is a discount if you pre-order both. Really interested in finally playing these. Fun trivia: at some point Sakurai wanted to put Ayumi from this game in Smash Melee.
Miitopia 05/21
This is a game I skipped on 3DS and will skip again here… but it doesn’t actually look bad. It’s a pretty wacky RPG-ish thing where the relationship between Miis determines how they’ll act in battle, sometimes to your detriment. Might be okay.
Fighting EX Layer Another Dash 05/27
This is from the team that brought us the Street Fighter EX spin-off series, a set of 3D fighting games in the early 3D days. This is a series they made a bit before SFEX3, using very similar gameplay to the EX games (and I think some of the characters from EX that Capcom didn’t have the rights to). There was a new version of it in 2018, which I’ve heard good things about. Another Dash is a “free-to-play” version of the game. You get 4 playable characters, then you can pay I think 25$ for the rest of the roster. Looks pretty fun, there’s some pretty interesting mechanics here that I don’t think I’ve seen in other fighting games.
World’s End Club 05/28
This was previously on Apple Arcade, a platform that doesn’t actually exist. It’s an adventure game with action elements made by the creators of the Zero Escape series and Danganronpa, and it has an interesting premise of a bunch of anime kids being locked into a death game… and then the game is cancelled and they leave but the world seems to have ended. I’m pretty curious about this one.
PC RELEASE
Days Gone 05/18
Shitty PS4 exclusive is finally no longer exclusive (which is good, exclusives are anti-consumer). No idea why anyone would want to play this, but it’s there if you want it.
PS5 RELEASE
void tRrLM();++ //Void Terrarium++ 05/18
It’s Void Terrarium again, but on PS5. Alright. It’s a pretty good game, it’s on a bunch of other platforms already. This features fairly pointless additions like costumes and new fun ways for Toriko to suffer.
