Well I don’t have a super long time to write an intro as I just finished posting my Microsoft post. Thankfully there’s been no other presentations in-between so I don’t think there’s much to talk about before.
Squeenix’s E3 presentations have varied in quality quite a bit. Some awful, some okay, they’re very random. There’s a few rumors going for this one, might be fun to see if they’re real. Namely a Dark Souls-style FF game by Team Ninja and an FF collection for modern platforms. Also we know Babylon’s Fall will be there, I’m hyped to see more of that and hopefully a release date finally. But after getting disappointed by Microsoft I’m keeping my expectations low here.
As usual these are my “live” reactions to the event, I’m gonna edit those to make them readable and write overall thoughts at the end. Intro is written before seeing the show.
Starts in a minute so… let’s go? Maybe Squeenix will be okay. I dunno, Microsoft managed to lower my hype substantially.
The Show
New game by Eidos Montreal. Oh it’s the rumored Guardians of the Galaxy game. It’s a cinematic trailer… Oh hey gameplay. Seems to be co-op? I dunno, doesn’t do anything for me. I feel it’s probably based on the Avengers gameplay… which, you know, sucked. I’ll definitely look at reviews before even thinking about getting this. Some parts looked interesting, so maybe it’s not just more of the shitty Avengers game. October 26.
More GotG, let’s keep going I guess. Seems you only play as Star-Lord, and get different endings based on the choices you make. I’m definitely curious about the gameplay, because I thought this would just be more Avengers, but then I noticed it’s not actually the same devs, as Avengers was made by Crystal Dynamics and this seems to be in-house at Eidos Montreal.
And we’re seeing a gameplay demonstration. I mean, it’s a cutscene for now where a couple choices were made. Maybe we’ll get to actual gameplay soon. They’re walking around. No not “less whining more walking”, it should be “less walking more actual gameplay”. Okay so in combat you can punch shit, shoot different elemental lasers and give orders to your teammates… and you get EXP, so there’s RPG elements. I dunno, this could be okay. I need a bit more convincing. They sure are spending a long amount of time on this. Definitely looks better than the Avengers crap.
Finally something different. First up… a “pixel remaster” of the classic FF games, whatever that means. There you go, that rumor was true. It’s FF1 to 6. This was no info at all. Coming to Steam and mobile? Okay weird, I figured this would just be on everything. And a quick look at Legend of Mana remastered, which is coming very soon. That was a short trailer with no info, yay.
Up next… Marvel’s Avengers. That game is ass, I don’t care.
Black Panther game? Or is it just about Black Panther in the Avengers game? Yeah just an expansion. Whatever man.
Mobile games! Hitman Sniper. Whatever. Then is the Nier mobile game. Don’t care! Final Fantasy 1 warrior in Brave Exvius or something, whatever. More Brave Exvius stuff. Whatever. The FF7 mobile Battle Royale now. Whatever.
Platinum Games, let’s go! Some Babylon’s Fall… stuff. I don’t get when game trailers have these pointless “look at some environment for no reason” in trailers. Seems Babylon’s Fall has some multiplayer. The combat doesn’t look quite as cool as the previous times it was shown, but it does seem to have a lot of different weapons that play differently. This is planned as a live service game, reducing my hype. There’s a beta to sign up to, might be worth checking out.
Life is Strange. Snore.
New title from Square Enix Japan! Team Ninja, there it is. The rumors called it Souls-style. A team of characters is going into some castle to defeat Chaos. And that’s Garland. Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin. This could be good, it’s kinda hard to tell from the little gameplay shown but it seems to have interesting gameplay ideas. I want to see more of it. Stupidly the demo is only on PS5. 2022. This guy sure doesn’t like CHAOS.
And other stuff now. Just ads for current/soon upcoming games games. Nothing of note here, I think this is just an end-of-presentation sizzle reel. Eh. Yeah that’s it, presentation done.
Overall
Well… This was a weird one. Didn’t have much, but it did have… things. Some being questionable. Like, Marvel’s Avengers is an ass game no one liked, but they’re supporting the shit out of it for some reason. The FF1 to FF6 collection thingy is cool, but why is it only on Steam and Mobile? I’m thinking it might be revealed for Switch at Nintendo’s Direct, but if not it’s a really weird release. Babylon’s Fall is a game I was hyped for, but this trailer made it look… less good than previous ones. I’ll try the beta (once the website decides to work I’ll sign up), but I’m less excited than before. Live service, what?
Even the biggest highlights were… confusing. GotG seems okay, it’s kinda hard to actually tell from the presentation. It doesn’t seem to be the same gameplay as the shitty Avengers game, but it’s hard to tell from the gameplay shown here if it’s gonna be fun and how the leveling stuff will work in any way. Eh.
The other highlight I guess is Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin. It’s certainly a game… but this trailer says nothing about what the game is. I know you hit things with sword. I know Garland is in it. I know your dude really wants to kill CHAOS. But what is this game? Is it a full retelling of FF1? Is it a prequel? Is the girl that talks a few times in the trailer supposed to be Princess Sarah? What is this game? Why aren’t you telling me what this game is? And why is the demo only on PS5? This is some weird shit. A game announcement should at least give me a vague idea about what a game is, this one did nothing at all, it’s fucking weird.
So yeah, I’m very mixed about whatever this presentation even was. Meh/10
Anyways…
After this there are 3 presentations today that I’ll watch but probably won’t post a reaction to: a Back 4 Blood presentation that I’m not paying attention to right now, the PC Gaming Show and the Future Games Show. Unless they end up being really exciting I won’t end up posting about these.
And tomorrow there’s Capcom and Bandai having presentations, I’ll take notes but I’m not sure if I’ll make posts. So I may just be back on the E3 stuff on tuesday for Nintendo. I hope Nintendo can save this pathetic excuse of an E3.
