Games coming out in January 2022

It’s time for a new year! Finally done with the few 2021 GotY and 2022 hype posts so it’s back to regular business. And regular business means monthly release list post!

I posted a whole 10 times since the last release list post, which is pretty good. And I have a few more reviews coming, so I’m definitely keeping busy with this blog. Just a few holdover games to play through and write reviews for, pretty much.

January 2022 isn’t looking to be a huge month, but there are a few big-ish releases. We have; 1 Switch game, 4 multiplats, and 2 PC ports. For me there’s 2 games I’m definitely buying… and that’s it, unless I missed something.

Let’s go!

Oh and there’s DLC for Ghostrunner and Dead Cells.

Disclaimer: I only list games that I think are worth mentioning. This includes games I’m personally interested in, games that will likely be popular, highly advertised games, small interesting ones I may notice, and such. Not just games I care about myself, I highlight as much as I think makes sense. And of course, I can’t see the future, so I may be missing games and I may be listing games that may get delayed.

SWITCH RELEASE

Pokémon Legends: Arceus 01/28

Pokémon Legends: Arceus
Pokemon is always fine. The series doesn’t change much, so each game tends to remain roughly as good as the last. Makes my reviews of Pokemon a bit annoying because… there’s not much to say. But there’s a constant demand for change in the series, and this might be what that change could be.

This features a more open structure, which I hope makes sense, but also features more gameplay outside of battle. You can sneak around and try to capture pokemon without fighting them, and some pokemon will try to attack you while on the field. I have been avoiding trailers for this game beyond the first two, so I only know some minor changes to combat (there’s a stance system or something) but I’m not sure how the whole gameplay loop ends up being like.

I’m pretty interested in this game, I hope the different systems work well and lead to an interesting Pokemon experience.

MULTIPLATFORM RELEASES

Demon Gaze Extra 01/06 (Switch, PS4)

Demon Gaze Extra
This release keeps getting pushed, I had it on last month’s list and almost on the month before, and the month before that. Just release the damn thing.

Anyways… Demon Gaze was a pretty good grid-based dungeon-crawling RPG on the Vita. This version seems to add a few minor things. Yay.

Windjammers 2 01/20 (Switch, PC, PS4, Xbone)

Windjammers 2
Windjammers is a badass Neo Geo arcade game that is essentially a combination of Pong and a fighting game. Both players stand on their side of a field, and they throw a frisbee, trying to get it past the opponent into a goal. You can dive to catch it, lob it in the air, do special throws… It’s really fun. This pretty much looks like a really fun, faster version of it.

Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Extraction 01/20 (PC, PS4, Xbone, PS5, Xbox X/S)

Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Extraction
I had this in a previous month but it got suddenly pushed back. This is a team-based FPS that feels a bit Left 4 Dead-like, with a more tactical approach to the combat, featuring aliens rather than zombies. This seems like something that should be pretty good. It’s just not my kinda thing, but I hope to see some vtubers playing it.

Gunvolt Chronicles: Luminous Avenger iX 2 01/27 (Switch, PC, PS4, Xbone, PS5, Xbox X/S)

Gunvolt Chronicles: Luminous Avenger iX
The first Luminous Avenger iX was pretty good. You still play as Copen, and it looks pretty similar to the first game. Should be a nice game to check out while waiting for Azure Striker Gunvolt 3.

PC RELEASES

Monster Hunter Rise 01/12

Monster Hunter Rise
It’s Monster Hunter Rise. On PC. Featuring framerate. And resolution. And overall better graphics. I mean, we already know this game is good. Get it if you missed it on Switch.

God of War 01/14

God of War
It’s God of War. On PC. Featuring framerate. But it has the same kinda meh gameplay as the PS4 version. God of War is very okay, not super noteworthy. Get it if you’re bored and have literally nothing else to play.
