I did get a bunch of posts out in June, but I still have at least 2 reviews I was hoping to have out earlier, and I’m late on this post as well. Blah. But I will try to get the TMNT and Neon White reviews out very soon. And I’m playing a couple of other things, and this month isn’t empty, so there’s plenty for me to post still.
July does seem to have a decent amount of games. Actually less than June when it comes to sheer numbers, but there’s some good stuff here. Here I’m highlighting: 10 Multiplats, 4 Switch games, and 2 PC games. I’m probably getting 7 of these (and putting some in the maybe list).
Disclaimer: I only list games that I think are worth mentioning. This includes games I’m personally interested in, games that will likely be popular, highly advertised games, small interesting ones I may notice, and such. Not just games I care about myself, I highlight as much as I think makes sense. And of course, I can’t see the future, so I may be missing games and I may be listing games that may get delayed.
MULTIPLATFORM RELEASES
F1 22 07/01 (PC, PS4, Xbone, PS4, Xbox X/S)
It’s F1. I know people like using this series partly for PC benchmarking for certain aspects of PC component testing, though there are actual fans as well. I’m sure this is great. It’s not my thing.
Yurukill: The Calumniation Game 07/05 (Switch, PC, PS4, PS5)
This is a shmup mixed with a visual novel. It looks okay.
Klonoa Phantasy Reverie Series 07/08 (Switch, PC, PS4, Xbone, PS5, Xbox X/S)
This is both a port/remaster of the Wii remaster of Klonoa, as well as a remaster of Klonoa 2 which hasn’t seen a port since its original PS2 release. Pretty cool little collection, the Klonoa games are quite fun. Hopefully this leads to an actual new Klonoa game at some point, that series needs to come back properly.
Krut: The Mythic Wings 07/12 (Switch, PC, PS4, Xbone, PS5, Xbox X/S)
This is a side-scrolling platformer that gives me some Actraiser 2 vibes. Looks kinda cool.
Spidersaurs 07/14 (Switch, PC, PS4, Xbone, PS5, Xbox X/S)
This is a Contra-style run-and-gun game, where you fight bug/dinosaur hybrids. It’s made by the team behind Contra 4, at least according to the trailer I saw. Looks fun. The theme song in the trailer is a bit weird, but I guess it’s trying to do a 90s cartoon opening/toy commercial vibe.
Stray 07/19 (PC, PS4, PS5)
People have been kinda hyping this game for a while. I have a question though… Why? Originally and until not-E3 we knew nothing about it gameplay-wise (so the hype is unwarranted). And now that we saw how it plays at not-E3… why would anyone be interested in this? Looks really boring. Maybe the trailer was just bad?
River City Saga: Three Kingdoms 07/21 (Switch, PC, PS4)
It’s River City Ransom (Downtown Nekketsu Monogatari) but set in the Three Kingdoms story. It’s the usual Kunio-Kun stuff, looks good.
Capcom Arcade 2nd Stadium 07/22 (Switch, PC, PS4, Xbone)
I’m a bit curious why Capcom is making this when they could just as easily make more DLC for the first one which came out last year. Didn’t pay too much attention to which games are here, though it’s like the first one where the app is free, one game is free, and the games are DLC.
Bear and Breakfast 07/28 (PC, Switch)
You manage a BnB, but you’re a bear. That’s it, that’s the joke. People like this kind of game, hope they like this one.
Digimon Survive 07/29 (Switch, PS4)
This game has been on the “is this ever actually coming out” list for years now. It was announced in 2018 and was meant to come out every year after that, some years getting many release dates. But it is actually coming out… on the same day as Xenoblade… Oops.
That said, it’s a strategy RPG of sorts, with some visual novel stuff in-between battles, which is pretty standard for the genre at this point. I’m pretty curious to try this out after years of delays, I’ve enjoyed some Digimon games.
SWITCH RELEASES
Live A Live 07/22
Live A Live is a classic SNES RPG that most people outside of Japan haven’t played (maybe through a fan-translated rom, I didn’t play it) as it never got an official English release. Well now it’s coming out worldwide (published by Nintendo despite being a Squeenix game), so we can play it, and it’s updated with the HD-2D graphic style of Octopath/Triangle Strategy.
It covers a lot of time periods and areas of the world and such, and I guess those separate storylines eventually start lining up with each other at some point. Definitely seems like something I’ll enjoy.
Azure Striker Gunvolt 3 07/28
Gunvolt Chronicles: Luminous Avenger iX 2 really didn’t impress me, but this is the mainline series, and it looks pretty interesting. This one has a new playable character, a cool sword-using girl named Kirin, and she plays very differently from Gunvolt. Gunvolt is still playable, but it seems his gameplay role is different as Kirin gets to summon him as she fills out a meter. I dunno, looks fun, should be interesting.
And as a note, it’s coming to Xbox a few days after this, I probably won’t highlight that next month.
Captain Velvet Meteor: The Jump+ Dimensions 07/28
This is a turn-based strategy game where manga characters from Shonen Jump+ fight giant monsters I guess… I’m not familiar with any of the series represented, except for Loid Forger from Spy X Family. Also, Captain Velvet Meteor isn’t someone from Jump+, I’m not exactly sure who that is (I did find a short animation from like 2012 with that character, not sure if there’s other stuff). It’s certainly an interesting game. I’m putting this on the maybe list.
Xenoblade Chronicles 3 07/29
A new Xenoblade! My summer vacation actually lines up with this, so I’ll spend a bit of time on that as soon as it comes out. I haven’t really informed myself on how this one works (I avoid all trailers except announcement trailers for games I’m buying for sure), but the first one was quite good, the sequel was better even though the gacha aspect was a bit weird (I never did get KOS-MOS), and the very little I’ve seen of this one also looks great. It seems like it puts a lot of characters in your active party which could be fun depending on how it’s set up. Pretty excited for this one.
PC RELEASES
Rune Factory 5 07/13
This came out on Switch earlier this year. I guess it’s coming out on PC now. I had no idea this was gonna happen. Cool.
Loopmancer 07/13
This is a kinda cool-looking side-scrolling action roguelite. It’s a bit of a groundhog day thing story-wise where you wake up at the start of the same day when you die (so there’s a plot reason for the roguelite nature of it). Looks like it could be fun.
