I didn’t quite get all the reviews out that I wanted since the last post. Xenoblade 3’s review has been in half-written form for a bit, I just finished Rollerdrome, I finished Azure Striker Gunvolt 3 like 2 weeks ago, I’m not done with Super Bullet Break and Blossom Tales 2 which I started a bit ago… I need to start actually getting stuff out. Also I started Soul Hacker 2 yesterday but obviously that’s got a while to go before I can review it. Reviews for a bunch of stuff, coming soon, I’m trying 😀
September actually has some games. Which is nice. A lot of curious, interesting ones that might end up being good, but as far as big heavy hitters, there ain’t much. So here I’m highlighting: 19 Multiplats, 2 Switch games, 2 PC games and the dumbest PS5 release yet. I’m getting something between 5 and 9 of these, I dunno.
*EDIT 08/30: ADDED A MULTIPLAT GAME*
Disclaimer: I only list games that I think are worth mentioning. This includes games I’m personally interested in, games that will likely be popular, highly advertised games, some more niche stuff I may notice, and such. Not just games I care about myself, I highlight as much as I think makes sense. And of course, I can’t see the future, so I may be missing games and I may be listing games that may get delayed.
MULTIPLATFORM RELEASES
Ooblets 09/01 (Switch, PC, Xbone)
I feel I’ve seen this game around for a while, at presentations and stuff. I thought for sure it was released already, but apparently not. I’m finding articles from 2017 about it, so it’s definitely been a pretty long dev time (though some stuff I’m finding says it’s a 2-people dev team, so it makes sense). What I’ve seen of it doesn’t interest me in the least, but hey, for the people who’ve been waiting for years, it’s finally coming out!
Made in Abyss: Binary Star Falling into Darkness 09/02 (Switch, PC, PS4)
This is based on the anime/novel, but you play as a different character that is exploring the abyss, fighting some of the monsters, gather materials and such stuff. It seems very sidequest-focused. Might actually be kinda interesting.
JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: All Star Battle R 09/02 (PC, Switch, PS4, Xbone, PS5, Xbox X/S)
This was a pretty cool fighting game on the PS3. It came out in 2013, a few months after the first season of the David Production anime (which included parts 1 and 2). I wasn’t as familiar with JoJo back then (having only seen the OLD Stardust Crusaders OVA, and said David Production anime up to part 2), but I still had a lot of fun with this game. I won’t get this version, but if you missed it back then, it’s worth checking out.
TemTem 09/06 (PC, Switch, PS5, Xbox X/S)
This is a semi-MMO Pokemon-style game. It sounds like it has interesting systems for combat. I have a friend that’s really excited for it, so it’s on the maybe list for me.
Steelrising 09/08 (PC, PS5, Xbox X/S)
This is a kinda-souls-inspired action game where you play as a robot lady. Seems to promote aggressive play and has pretty cool animations. I have this on the maybe list, looks pretty fun.
Jack Move 09/08 (PC), 09/20 (Switch, PS4, Xbone)
This is an RPG that I see some people comparing to Golden Sun, but mostly because of the camera perspective in battle. Seems like you only ever control one characer. Definitely looks interesting to me, another on the maybe list.
Metal Hellsinger 09/15 (PC, PS5, Xbox X/S)
This is a fast-paced FPS rhythm game with metal music that ramps up as you do better. There was a demo and it was quite fun. I’ve had this on my “want to play” list for a good long while.
Return to Monkey Island 09/19 (PC, Switch)
Very not a fan of corporate memphis and Monkey Island doing that is a bit disappointing, but other than that, I welcome the return of the series and hope it’s good. I also find it very disappointing that the devs, who are very experienced, would go all “no, it’s the gamers who are wrong” bullshit modern devs like to do, just because people are disappointed with the meh visual style… regrow some balls, Ron. I’ll still pick it up at some point.
Soulstice 09/20 (PC, PS5, Xbox X/S)
This is another action game, that I feel people might call souls-like, but this definitely has more of a DMC3 inspiration than Souls. It looks pretty fun from everything I’ve seen. It’s pretty high on the maybe list.
The Diofield Chronicle 09/22 (Switch, PC, PS4, Xbone, PS5, Xbox X/S)
This is one of a pretty crazy amount of Squeenix games actually coming out for the rest of the year. This one is a strategy RPG, but the combat is a kinda-RTS where you control a small squad of units, and you can pause the action to select special attacks and such. The little I’ve seen looks pretty fun. I believe there’s a demo, I’m not touching it, I’ll just buy the game when it comes out. Also it has a non-stupid Special Edition as it comes with a board game which is pretty cool… a bit on the expensive side though.
Shovel Knight Dig 09/23 (Switch, PC)
This is a new Shovel Knight platformer, which seems to have a bunch of similarities to the main Shovel Knight games, but also it has this vertical digging concept to it. Looks pretty fun.
The Legend of Heroes: Trails from Zero 09/27 (Switch, PC, PS4)
The Legend of Heroes (a side-series of the Dragon Slayer series) continues being a series I’m scared to get into, because there’s so many games in it, and I have no idea where to start from at this point because some people do say you should play them in order, some don’t… and either way it just seems like too much time investment.
I think people have been pretty hyped for this one in particular though.
Tunic 09/27 (PS4, PS5)
Well just the Switch is missing this one now… Weirdly enough. I haven’t actually played this yet, it’s been on the maybe list for a while.
Grounded 09/27 (PC, Xbone, Xbox X/S)
This is that one Obsidian game with the shrunken kids fighting bugs in their backyard, that feels like it’s been in early access for years now. I know very little about it, and the little I’ve seen doesn’t interest me. It’s one of them multiplayer survival game things, which puts it in the meh category for me.
Valkyrie Elysium 09/29 (PS4, PS5)
Squeenix here again, this time with a new Valkyrie Profile game. Big surprise that this series is back, but a welcome one. I will definitely pick this up, but I’m waiting for the PC version in November. A more regular Valkyrie Profile game would be cool rather than a more action-y one, but I’m fine with this too.
Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth 09/29 (PS4, PS5)
I guess this is a port of the PSP version of the game. This should be on everything, not just Playstations, so a bit of a dumb release (hopefully it comes to other stuff later). Lenneth was a PSP port of the original PS1 game, it was pretty great, do check it out if you’ve missed it before.
Little Witch Nobeta 09/29 (Switch, PC, PS4)
This is a third-person action game where you play as a little anime girl that does magic, with a focus on ranged combat. It’s been on Steam as early access for a good while, so there’s plenty of videos out there if you want to see what it’s like. Also Polka, Fubuki and Noel from Hololive are voice acting some of the bosses, fun.
SWITCH RELEASES
Splatoon 3 09/09
It’s Splatoon. As far as the multiplayer, that seems fairly identical to Splatoon 2, with new maps and weapons. So if you enjoy that, that’s still gonna be good. And the single player should also be good. I’m hesitant to buy this because I’d only play it for the single-player, since I don’t sign up to paid online scams. But hey, this is the big release of the month, it’ll be huge.
Taiko no Tatsujin: Rhythm Festival 09/23
Still waiting for a reasonably-priced bundle with the drum. I want to try this series, but I refuse to play with joy-cons, and I’m not paying like 100$ for a shitty plastic drum.
PC RELEASES
Black Witchcraft 09/08
This is a pretty random inclusion, I just thought it looked pretty cool. It’s a fun-looking side-scrolling action game with magical shit, but also it’s based on Edgar Allan Poe. Weird.
Freedom Planet 2 09/13
I was actually surprised when I finally noticed this is just a PC release right now, with consoles getting it next year. After all the delays I assumed it would get simultaneous multiplat releases, but I guess not.
That said, Freedom Planet was a very nicely done Sonic-inspired game (that originally started as a Sonic fangame), with interesting mechanics using several characters. I’m just assuming this is gonna be pretty similar to the original, I actually didn’t inform myself much on this one since I already knew I’d be buying it. No need to watch trailers for games that are insta-buy.
PS5 RELEASE
The Last of Us Part I 09/02
Crappy crap of crapness.
I assume the real reason they’re re-remastering this (beyond the free money) is to rewrite parts of the story, because Last of Us 2 has massive plot holes if you consider basically anything about the first game.
Ellie needs to become braindead. Joel needs to become not experienced at dealing with the post-apocalypse world and become prone to really stupid mistakes that cause him to get killed. The murder of Ellie (which Joel prevents) needs to actually lead to a cure (it likely wouldn’t, as per that game’s lore). The cure needs to actually somehow be easy to mass produce and distribute worldwide in a post-apocalyptic world (lol). The cure needs to somehow be able to fix all the fuck-up-ness of the world to be able to start rebuilding (it wouldn’t help). The Fireflies need to not be evil assholes (they are). Joel needs to kill Abby’s dad (that was clearly someone else)…
Without all that, Joel’s decision at the end of the first game is fully justified and you can’t treat him as a bad guy like the second game does. And that’s just scratching the surface at how bad Last of Us 2’s story is… And that’s without talking about how boring the gameplay is in this series.
