I’m still not quite getting all the reviews out that I want, though I did get several posts out this month anyways. At this point I’m just planning on making a post near the end of the year with very quick paragraph-long impressions of them for games I skipped reviewing. Still, there’s some games I want to do full reviews of, such as TemTem and DioField Chronicle (which I’m probably close-ish to the end). Plus, of course, there’s stuff coming out, and games I haven’t played yet that I will (like Freedom Planet 2 and Metal Hellsinger), so I have a lot of potential content coming still. Good stuff!
October feels a bit less busy than some other months this year, but there’s still… stuff. Basically, this is gonna give me a bit of time to catch up. So for October I’m highlighting: 17 multiplats, 7 Switch games and 4 PC games. As far as what I’ve getting… there’s 4 I’m getting for sure, and a couple maybes.
*EDIT 09/29: Added a PC game*
Disclaimer: I only list games that I think are worth mentioning. This includes games I’m personally interested in, games that will likely be popular, highly advertised games, some more niche stuff I may notice, and such. Not just games I care about myself, I highlight as much as I think makes sense. And of course, I can’t see the future, so I may be missing games and I may be listing games that may get delayed.
MULTIPLATFORM RELEASES
Overwatch 2 10/04 (PC, PS4, Xbone, PS5, Xbox X/S, Switch)
Blizzard fucks up a once-great game. I’m not surprised. Overwatch started so well, but it seems Blizzard doesn’t like having a good thing going. They fucked the first game over due to making things less fun to appeal to the competitive meta (very very small portion of the fanbase is “competitive”), but this “sequel” is just worse in every way. Every time I hear something about this stupid shit game, the worse it gets. Now new players can’t even play all the OLD characters, they need to play a hundred fucking matches to get access to them (that takes a while if you’re not just playing the game nonstop), and that’s in addition to the battle pass, and the “requires your phone number to play” thing. Oh and the original game no longer works, haha fuck you Blizzard.
Nickelodeon Kart Racers 3: Slime Speedway 10/07 (Switch, PC, PS4, Xbone, PS5, Xbox X/S)
I have no idea if these are good. I know people complained about the last one because it didn’t have voice acting (which is a kinda lame complaint). Well this one does. But hopefully the gameplay’s okay, I dunno, people were too worried about the voice acting to care about what actually matters in a video game. Non-Mario Kart racers have this nasty habit of not being very good other than Sonic All Stars Racing Transformed though, so I kinda have to assume it’s meh.
Hey it has Garfield from Garfield Kart, whoa!
No More Heroes III 10/11 (PC, PS4, Xbone, PS5, Xbox X/S)
This wasn’t very good, unfortunately. But hey, now it’s not stuck on Switch.
Atari Mania 10/13 (Switch, PC)
This actually looks like a very interesting release. It seems like some sort of adventure game, but there’s a bunch of minigames that are based on classic Atari games, with updated graphics but the same classic gameplay. I dunno, it looks fun. I’m surprised. A bit of a weird to release this before a big Atari collection, but it’s different enough.
Asterix & Obelix XXXL: The Ram From Hibernia 10/13 (Switch, PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox X/S)
There’s a weird amount of these Asterix games. They don’t look particularly great, but I guess they must sell okay if they keep making them. This one is more of a top-down game of sorts, which is different from the 3D Beat ’em up style of the previous games.
Dragon Ball: The Breakers 10/14 (Switch, PC, PS4, Xbone)
This is Dead by Daylight, but with Dragon Ball characters. It doesn’t look any good. I watched 2 full matches, and it just doesn’t look interesting. Might have been skill issues, but I’m not gonna be the one to try it.
Them’s Fightin’ Herds 10/18 (Switch, PS4, Xbone, PS5, Xbox X/S)
It might sound like a stupid game, starting as an unofficial My Little Pony fighting game that Hasbro kinda stupidly crushed, and it being made into its own original game instead, using original ponies (and I think with some involvement of some official MLP people IIRC). But then for it to come out and actually being a very competent fighting game, now that’s surprising. Legitimately a good game, if you’re into fighting games I’d say it’s worth checking out. I’m gonna continue not buying fighting games anymore.
A Plague Tale: Requiem 10/18 (PC, PS5, Xbox Series X, Switch (cloud version lol))
I have not played the first Plague Tale game. I hear good things. Videos for this one though looked pretty cool so far with some actually possibly interesting stealth gameplay. I’ll keep an eye out.
Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed 10/18 (PC, PS4, Xbone, PS5, Xbox X/S)
At first glance it looks like a Phasmophobia-inspired co-op game, but turns out the ghost is controlled by a player, so it ends up being something a bit more akin to Dead by Daylight (how are there two of these this month?) where the Ghostbuster team tries to capture the ghost player. Not very interesting to me, but maybe it’ll lead to some fun vtuber streams or something.
I wish they’d make a sequel to the 2009 game.
Kamiwaza: Way of the Thief 10/21 (Switch, PC, PS4)
Looking at the graphics, that’s gotta be an older game, right? … Yeah, remaster of a PS2 game. It’s a stealth game where you steal shit. Looks pretty wacky. I dunno, doesn’t look extra interesting, but I think it never came out outside of Japan, so it might be a fun one to check out just because of that.
Scorn 10/21 (PC, Xbox X/S)
I don’t quite know what this is meant to be. I recall seeing some of this a while ago and it gave me FPS vibes, but videos of the first ~30 minutes started popping up and… Well, there was certainly no shooting in that time. Just a lot of walking and looking at some H.R. Giger shit. I dunno, looks like a walking simulator. A cool-looking walking simulator, but a walking simulator nonetheless. Maybe the rest of the game won’t be so mundane and boring? But this wasn’t a good first impression. I’m not taking a chance.
Persona 5 Royal 10/21 (Switch, PC, Xbone, PS5, Xbox X/S)
It’s Persona 5, finally not being stupidly relegated to Playstation. Atlus always takes a very long time to make sensible choices. If you haven’t played this yet, it’s worth getting. Like P4 before it, it’s very long and filler-y with a lot of shit that isn’t gameplay in-between dungeon runs, and it does overstay its welcome, but it’s still a solid, well made game. Get it.
New Tales from the Borderlands 10/18 (Switch, PC, PS4, Xbone, PS5, Xbox X/S)
I saw this was getting fucking digital pre-order bonuses with in-game currency and cosmetics… The fuck is this? It’s a TellTale-style barely-game where you just follow a story and make dialogue choices, right? Like the last Tales from the Borderlands? The fuck would it need currency and costumes?
Anyways, big meh.
Gotham Knights 10/25 (PC, PS4, Xbone, PS5, Xbox X/S)
I saw a few videos for this. It doesn’t look good. I really don’t have anything to say about it. If I see a lot of positive reception I might re-evaluate. But for now… no.
Yomawari: Lost in the Dark 10/25 (Switch, PC, PS4)
Yomawari a cute little 2D survival horror series that seems pretty cool from what I’ve seen. I never played them though. Definitely check out some footage, it doesn’t look bad.
Star Ocean The Divine Force 10/27 (PC, PS4, Xbone, PS5, Xbox X/S)
Star Ocean. A series that started out okay, got 2 great sequels, got a fourth game that I actually remember liking even though it got a pretty negative reception (likely from Playstation fanboys being mad that it came out on 360 first), and a fifth game that was absolutely fucking awful on PS4 (I gave up on that one very fast).
This one… Well, there’s a demo, that I won’t try or watch footage of. I’ll buy this, play it, and hopefully get a good review out. I really hope it’s good.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II 10/28 (PC, PS4, Xbone, PS5, Xbox X/S)
Shooty McBoring is back! More boring than ever! I hear meh things about the beta. It will sell millions anyways.
SWITCH RELEASES
Nier: Automata The End of Yorha Edition 10/06
It’s Near A Tomato. It’s good. Wonder why it took so long for the Switch to get it.
No Man’s Sky 10/07
It’s No Man’s Sky. I refuse to buy it because the devs are lying assholes, even though they have apparently made it playable since the awful launch. If you’re more forgiving than me, might be a good buy.
Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope 10/20
The first Mario + Rabbids was a weirdly great game, taking Xcom-style gameplay and adding some fun Mario elements to it. And it had the coolest version of Bowser in any game ever, and great music. I’m very excited for this one.
Ultra Kaiju Monster Rancher 10/20
I just want to put this here even though it’s not actually coming out in the west right now (as far as is known right now). It is, however, coming out in english in Asia, if you want to import it (with the US release being digital-only some time this year apparently). It’s a regular Monster Rancher game (something we haven’t seen a new one of in a very long time), but it features monsters from the Ultraman series. Weird but I’ll take it.
EDIT: This release date is for US too, confirmed on october 10
Bayonetta 3 10/28
This was announced many years ago and then went pretty silent. Seems they just announced it when it was still pretty early in development, which is a stupid thing to do. But finally it’s coming, and the little I’ve seen (I didn’t watch the latest trailer) looks amazing. Seems to have a bit more of a focus on the summons, and there’s a new character to play. This is very heavily likely to be one of the best games this year.
Factorio 10/28
It’s Factorio. On Switch.
I haven’t played Factorio but I know it’s pretty popular. I figure if I were to play something like this I’d play it on PC though.
Ace Angler: Fishing Spirits 10/28
For no reason at all, here’s a fishing game. This does look like a pretty wacky one, with it having combat (no idea how that works) and a variety of minigames. Like, looking at a trailer for this makes it look fun, but I don’t know if it actually is.
PC RELEASES
9 Years of Shadows 10/10
This is a cool-looking side-scrolling action game. I believe it’s a Metroidvania if the kickstarter page is accurate… which it should be. From the little I’ve seen, the graphics are amazing and the action gameplay looks very solid. I know there’s a LOT of these indie metroidvanias around, so there’s a lot I just never highlighted.
Triangle Strategy 10/13
This was quite good on Switch. It’s going multiplat now which is great.
Lost Eidolons 10/13
I just saw a couple screenshots and videos of this, looks very Fire Emblem-ish but with realistic-looking people. It even has optional perma-death like modern FE. Might be interesting.
Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection 10/19
Uncharted is crap. Now it can be crap with a higher framerate. Cool!
Sackboy: A Big Adventure 10/27
I didn’t hear too much about this game back when it came out on PS4 and PS5. Saw a few positive impressions here and there, so I’m thinking it’s probably okay. This one’s a linear platformer in the style of of the Mario 3D World stuff.
