Games coming out in October 2023

Awawa?

Awawawawawawawawa!

Anyways, yeah, October games. September had a few posts because… stuff happened. But still haven’t gotten really any reviews out. I’ve been playing stuff, but I don’t feel like I have much to say about them. Maybe I’ll make a post of micro-reviews or something, I dunno.

So here I’m highlighting: 18 multiplats, 4 Switch games and 1 PS5 game that will come out to PC later. There’s just 1 “for sure” game for me this time, a few maybes though. I actually skipped on including a bunch of stuff because it was so obviously shitty (like that awful VR Ghostbusters game).

Let’s go I guess!

Disclaimer: I only list games that I think are worth mentioning. This includes games I’m personally interested in, games that will likely be popular, highly advertised games, some more niche stuff I may notice, and such. Not just games I care about myself, I highlight as much as I think makes sense. And of course, I can’t see the future, so I may be missing games and I may be listing games that may get delayed.

MULTIPLATFORM RELEASES

Disgaea 7: Vows of the Virtueless 10/03 (Switch, PC, PS4, PS5)
Disgaea 7: Vows of the Virtueless
Disgaea 6 is largely considered the low point of the Disgaea franchise, which I largely agree with. I don’t know if this is a return to form, it’s obviously kinda hard to say without playing it. It looks fine based on the few videos I’ve seen, I’m curious about it and it is on my maybe list.

Silent Hope 10/03 (Switch, PC)
Silent Hope
This is an action RPG that looks to be pretty generic and unimaginative. There’s some loot and roguelite-looking elements and crafting. It’s probably gonna be fun but nothing special.

Hellboy: Web of Wyrd 10/04 (PC, PS4, PS5)
Hellboy: Web of Wyrd
This is an action game where character and enemy animations have really funky framerate. It’s probably a stylistic thing, rather than a performance thing though, it looks fine. The game seems pretty average.

Wargroove 2 10/05 (Switch, PC)
Wargroove 2
Wargroove is the modern version of Advance Wars, which probably exists because Nintendo hasn’t been making Advance Wars (a remaster doesn’t count). It feels like a proper evolution of the genre. This has really good gameplay, lots of cool features like creating maps. Definitely one worth checking out.

Assassin’s Creed Mirage 10/05 (PC, PS4, Xbone, PS5, Xbox X/S)
Assassin's Creed Mirage
Assassin’s Creed sucks.  Just thought I’d point that out.

Sword Art Online: Last Recollection 10/06 (PC, PS4, Xbone, PS5, Xbox X/S)
Sword Art Online: Last Recollection
I don’t know if these are any good. It looks perfectly generic and kinda fucking boring in one of the videos I watched, which had enemies that were just massive damage sponges which is frequently bad design.

NHL 24 10/06 (PS4, Xbone, PS5, Xbox X/S)
NHL 24
It’s hockey. I’m sure a few people care about these.

Forza Motorsport 10/10 (PC, Xbox X/S)

It’s Forza Motorsport. Not to be mistaken for Forza Motorsport. Totally different game.
Anyways, Forza is Forza, at this point you know what you’re getting and you know if it’s really worth getting over one of the other Forza games you already have.

Lords of the Fallen 10/13 (PC, PS5, Xbox X/S)
Lords of the Fallen
It’s Lords of the Fallen. Not to be mistaken for Lords of the Fallen. Totally different game… in the same series. How do you have a series with a total of 2 games in it, both with the same title? Fucking idiots.
Anyways, this looks like a pretty solid action game that will be compared to Souls a bunch. Should be pretty okay, I’d wait for good video reviews but it doesn’t look awful.

Sonic Superstars 10/17 (Switch, PC, PS4, Xbone, PS5, Xbox X/S)
Sonic Superstars
This is a game that has had pretty bad trailers, IMO. And the reason for that is the trailers focus so heavily on the multiplayer aspect, which looks not very good. That said, the Sonic Mania creators seem to be pretty positive about it, and some of the purely-gameplay videos look fine, though it does seem to have a lot of pretty automatic rails and boosters and stuff. Maybe it gets better about that in later levels, I’m trying not to spoil myself too much on this because it’s pretty high on my maybe list.

Hot Wheels Unleashed 2: Turbocharged 10/19 (Switch, PC, PS4, Xbone, PS5, Xbox X/S)
Hot Wheels Unleashed 2: Turbocharged
The first Hot Wheels Unleashed was a surprisingly good game. It’s a pretty straightforward almost F-Zero-like racing game.  I haven’t looked too much at the sequel but it seems like more of the same so it will probably be pretty good as well. One place where the first one fails is definitely DLC, I assume that’s gonna be much of the same here.

Gargoyles Remastered 10/19 (Switch, PC, PS4, Xbone, PS5, Xbox X/S)
Gargoyles Remastered
This is a remaster of a Genesis game that I never played. I did see the cartoon a bit back in the day, it was pretty cool from what I remember. My complaint about this remaster is that the remastered graphics are garbage, I think they wanted to mimic the look of the show but didn’t have the talent for it. The original game’s graphics look way fucking better. The overall gameplay seems pretty good though, and if you don’t like the remastered graphics, you can switch to the classic ones when you want.

Cities: Skylines II 10/24 (PC, PS5, Xbox X/S)
Cities: Skylines II
Cities: Skylines is a super well made city-building simulator that I haven’t played but looked at a bunch and definitely appreciate what it’s doing even if it’s not something I’d really want to play myself. This looks pretty similar, I think this seems to have more details.

Crymachina 10/24 (Switch, PC, PS4, PS5)
Crymachina
This is a game I didn’t know much about before putting it in this list. It has you playing as what looks like robotic anime girls, in an action RPG with laser swords and boosters and shit. It looks pretty good visually. It seems pretty interesting.

Metal Gear Solid Master Collection Vol. 1 10/24 (Switch, PC, PS4, Xbone, PS5, Xbox X/S)
Metal Gear Solid Master Collection Vol. 1
It features the NES MG, the weird NES sorta-sequel Snake’s Revenge, and the first 3 MGS games, which is a decent collection. This is pretty much straight roms, as far as I can figure out, since they’re not improving the graphics or performance or anything. In fact I think some of the games here run at a slower framerate than the original versions (but I might be making that up, I read that somewhere).

The Lord of the Rings: Return to Moria 10/24 (PC, PS5)
The Lord of the Rings: Return to Moria
I don’t know if we can really take LOTR games too seriously after the complete blunder that was Gollum. This looks like some action game where you go down Moria to mine shit, I dunno really, I watched a 13 minutes gameplay from IGN and didn’t really get a feel of the game at all. Like, a less fun version of Deep Rock Galactic maybe? I have no idea.

Ghostrunner 2 10/26 (PC, PS5, Xbox X/S)
Ghostrunner 2
Ghostrunner was a great first-person parkour action game with 1-hit-kills. This looks pretty similar, so I assume it’s gonna be great too. Didn’t watch too much because it’s definitely right at the top of my maybe list for this month so I don’t want to spoil too much.

Alan Wake II 10/27 (PC, PS5, Xbox X/S)

I never played the first Alan Wake. I do have it, I just never played it. Looked okay. This looks pretty similar, with the whole light concept to damage enemies, but the camera is way closer to the character for some reason. Nice for fans of the first game who’ve been waiting 13 years for a sequel.

SWITCH RELEASES

Front Mission 2: Remake 10/05
Front Mission 2: Remake

I actually haven’t gotten the remake of the first yet, so I don’t know how good that was. So… yeah. If that one was good, this should be good too.

Detective Pikachu Returns 10/06
Detective Pikachu Returns

I haven’t played the first Detective Pikachu, but I did see the movie… which I assume is nothing like the original game, but it was pretty good. So I don’t really know what this is like, seems like a pretty cool classic-style adventure game, where you go around looking for clues and stuff. Seems fine, I don’t know if I’ll get it.

Borderlands 3 10/06
Borderlands 3

Borderlands 3 is probably the worst in the series. But hey it’s coming to Switch if you want a bad version of the worst game in the series.

Super Mario Bros. Wonder 10/20
Super Mario Bros. Wonder

Side-scrolling Mario, that isn’t a “New” Mario, but instead completely changed the graphical style, features many new gameplay elements and power-ups, and looks like at least an attempt at doing something different for Mario. I’m pretty excited to try this out, it looks like a really good time.
Only thing I hate is that they made Yoshi in a baby easy mode for game journalists.

PS5 RELEASES

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 10/20
Marvel's Spider-Man 2

The first Spider-Man game on PS4 was a boring empty open world with nothing to do in it. Yeah swinging around the city was fun, for about 5 minutes. And it didn’t have good enough combat design (even though it looked kinda cool) to warrant the boringness. I dunno if this improves on the original at all, but I’m not giving it a chance.
