Video Games coming out in May 2024

Oh I’m late on this oops. Well, not like there’s anything exciting coming out recently anyways. Basically just Stellar Blade and that’s temporarily stuck on PS5 because Shift Up were idiots who decided to say yes to the Sony money. I’ll get it once it’s on PC like it was originally announced to be. Might even be un-Sony’d by that point.

So for May 2024 I’m highlighting: 7 multiplats, 2 Switch games and 4 PC games. This is a month without highlights. Like, wow. This year is BAD.

Let’s go!

Disclaimer: I only list games that I think are worth mentioning. This includes games I’m personally interested in, games that will likely be popular, highly advertised games, some more niche stuff I may notice, and such. This is not just games I care about myself, I highlight as much as I think makes sense. Of course, I can’t see the future, so I may be missing games and I may be listing games that may get delayed.

Oh and I didn’t include Braid again. It was there last month because game devs are just not able to announce release dates correctly.

MULTIPLATFORM GAMES

Prison Architect 2 05/07 (PC, PS5, Xbox X/S)
Prison Architect 2
I heard good things about Prison Architect. This one seems very similar to the first gameplay-wise but the graphics are a bit nicer. I look forward to the Let’s Game It Out video.

Pac-Man Mega Tunnel Battle: Chomp Champs 05/08 (PC, Switch, PS4, Xbone, PS5, Xbox X/S)
Pac-Man Mega Tunnel Battle: Chomp Champs
This is a really dumb-looking Pac-Man battle royale game (which, incidentally, is not Pac-Man: Battle Royale from 2010). I dunno, just looks lame. Gameplay videos I found that aren’t trailers make it look tremendously slow and boring.

Neptunia Game Maker R:Evolution 05/14 (Switch, PS4, PS5)
Neptunia Game Maker R:Evolution
It’s a new Nep game. It’s the usual stuff, but there’s a side thing where you’re building a game company or something. Doesn’t seem to be doing anything different from the rest of the series overall.

Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II 05/21 (PC, Xbox X/S)
Senua's Saga: Hellblade II
It’s a sequel to Hellblade, a game that looked kinda meh IMO, as far as gameplay. I know people enjoyed it, and it’s probably gonna do its own thing decently. Just not my kinda thing even though it should be. Also it sure took a shitload of time to come out, shit was announced 5 years ago alongside the UselessBox Series X, it’s so fucking stupid to announce a game when it’s so far away from release.

World of Goo 2 05/23 (Switch, PC)
World of Goo 2
I feel like World of Goo 1 was all over the place when it originally came out back in 2008. I never played it, but I’d see it everywhere. I don’t even really know what kind of game it is. This looks a lot like the videos I saw of the first World of Goo. No idea if it’s any good, but hey, finally the fans got a new one.

MultiVersus 05/28 (PC, PS4, Xbone, PS5, Xbox X/S)
MultiVersus
This might be one of the worst Smash clones I’ve ever played, and I played most of them. I participated in a few of the closed betas and it has such bad game feel, attacks suck to use, and most of the characters (at the time, there were a few more in one of the later betas) weren’t fun to play. But it has 0.1% power Shaggy so that’s pretty cool I guess.

Legitimately, avoid this game unless they changed absolutely everything about it after the betas.

Umbraclaw 05/30 (PC, Switch, PS4, Xbone, PS5, Xbox X/S)
Umbraclaw
This is a 2D platformer where you play as a cat that gets powers by dying (so sometimes you have to die on purpose to progress). Looks interesting enough. It’s on the maybe list.

SWITCH RELEASES

Endless Ocean Luminous 05/02
Endless Ocean Luminous
Well if I understand the description from the first game, this is a game where you swim around at the ocean and look at shit. Sounds pretty fucking boring 😀

Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door 05/23
Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door
This is a full remake of Paper Mario TTYD for some reason even though they’ve changed very little other than some of the english script being adjusted for “modern audiences” or whatever. This was already on the “don’t care” list. What we need is a good new Paper Mario and Nintendo just refuses to make it. This is a stupid release.

PC RELEASES

Homeworld 3 05/13
Homeworld 3

This is Gearbox (previous non-remasters weren’t) so my expectations aren’t high, but Homeworld is legitimately pretty cool. Not the kind of game I’ll play or am any good at, but the large scale 3D space strategy style is some cool shit.

Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut 05/16
Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut

I was pretty sour on Tsushima when I played it, but I look back on it a slight bit more favorably. It’s mostly meh, but so many games that come out recently are so much worse. Good for any game to be taken out of the Sony hostage situation, so that’s a plus.

Gestalt: Steam & Cinder 05/21
Gestalt: Steam & Cinder

This has been in my line of sight for years, it was in the list of upcoming game every year since 2020 but it’s finally coming out… And I might not be as interested anymore just because of the metroidvania fatigue. It’s going on the wishlist still.

Skald: Against the Black Priory 05/30
Skald: Against the Black Priory

This is actually the one new game I actually plan on buying in May. Though there is a demo so maybe I should check that first. It’s an RPG made in the style of the classic Ultima games, with similar gameplay and what looks like EGA graphics. It’s a pretty interesting release.
