Ayo. It’s another month. June COULD be interesting because it’s “E3” time so a bunch of companies are doing presentations to announce games and stuff… I’d say there’s a solid 2% chance something interesting will be announced, considering how this year has gone so far (if leaks are true we’re at least getting a new Doom, but I put no trust in leaks). The industry is in shambles and basically no game company cares, it’s actually insane.
And if the State of Play from today is any indication, things will continue being shit. I was planning to post about the State of Play separately… but fuck that, it really wasn’t worth it. If I do a post about “E3” presentations I will mention it there, but as it is… the most interesting game was Infinity Nikki, and that’s a previously-announced game… that’s coming to PC (as are all games that were shown in the State of Play, AstroBot might be the one exception)… The PS5 is such a stupid console, don’t buy it 😀
So for June 2024 I’m highlighting: 7 multiplats, 2 Switch games, a PC release and a PS4 game… Yes, 4. As for big highlights, I can’t say there’s any, considering the biggest thing here is fucking DLC. There’s a few things here I might grab, but it’s another slow month, surprising no one.
Disclaimer: I only list games that I think are worth mentioning. This includes games I’m personally interested in, games that will likely be popular, highly advertised games, some more niche stuff I may notice, and such. This is not just games I care about myself, I highlight as much as I think makes sense. Of course, I can’t see the future, so I may be missing games and I may be listing games that may get delayed.
MULTIPLATFORM RELEASES
Downward Enhanced 06/04 (Switch, PC, PS5, Xbox X/S)
I never heard of this before. This is a game from 2017 that completely escaped my radar, but I saw it here and thought it looked pretty cool. It’s a first-person parkour game that gives me some heavy Mirror’s Edge vibes. I don’t know if I’ll get it but it looks interesting so I thought I’d highlight it anyways.
Killer Klowns from Outer Space: The Game 06/04 (PC, PS4, Xbone, PS5, Xbox X/S)
This is a movie game! The movie itself is something of a cult classic, being a scfi horror comedy. The game, well, it’s a monsters vs humans multiplayer arena shooter game, where a team of humans fights a team of Klowns. The klowns have their own unique abilities (and some fun kill animations). When humans are knocked down they are placed on hooks… Sounds familiar. What is it with classic comedy horror movies being turned into uninteresting Dead by Daylight rip-offs? Seems a bit less lame than the Evil Dead one, but still.
Rocket Knight Adventures: Re-Sparked 06/11 (Switch, PC, PS4, PS5)
This is just a collection of 3 classic games: Rocket Knight Adventures, Sparkster and Sparkster. Yes there’s 2 games in this series called Sparkster, one on SNES and one on Sega Genesis (in the west they’re both just called Sparkster, in japan the Sega Genesis one has the “Rocket Knight Adventures 2” subtitle). Rocket Knight Adventures is a fantastic game, the sequels are both good but not as good as the first. That’s it, that’s what it is. They’re overpricing it.
Monster Hunter Stories 06/14 (Switch, PC, PS4)
I used to not be a Monster Hunter fan, but I saw the light in recent times. But that means I missed this game the first time around on 3DS, so this HD remaster is interesting to me. I did play Stories 2 and actually really loved it… So I’ll have to check this one out.
Why’s it coming to PS4 and not PS5? … more on that later? I get that it’s backward compatible but this is still a really weird decision.
Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance 06/14 (Switch, PC, PS4, Xbone, PS5, Xbox X/S)
It’s SMT5… Coming out on everything which is nice, and it features some new content, new features and all the DLC stuff from the original release (which was not important and just a waste of money). They are also delisting the original game entirely on Switch which is kinda stupid. But, unless we find out about a lot of censorship or something, whatever I guess. The game’s good, do check it out.
Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree 06/21 (PC, PS4, Xbone, PS5, Xbox X/S)
I haven’t actually looked at anything related to this. I had a lot of fun with Elden Ring and I did finish that game. This sounds like it adds a shitload of stuff from the little I heard (basically a whole game’s worth), but it’s DLC so I’m probably not getting it, at least not at launch at full price. This is actually the sort of DLC I’m okay with, though I’d rather just see it be a full game rather than DLC.
Spy × Anya: Operation Memories 06/28 (Switch, PS4, PS5)
It’s a game where you play as Anya being cute and doing a bunch of minigames and stuff related to her daily life. There’s some genre variety based on the trailers, like maze games, a beat ’em up featuring Yor and probably a bunch of other stuff. Looks cute, I’ll almost certainly watch a Vtuber play it (if anyone at Phase Connect plays it, because they’re mostly the only ones I actively watch anymore).
SWITCH RELEASES
Super Monkey Ball: Banana Rumble 06/25
It’s a new Monkey Ball. It has some multiplayer shit going on in its core gameplay which is unique to the series. I don’t know, doesn’t look super interesting.
Luigi’s Mansion 2 HD 06/27
Luigi’s Mansion 2 was okay. Definitely the weak point of the series. It’s getting an HD remaster for some reason. Okay.
PC RELEASES
Kingdom Hearts 06/13
It’s finally coming out to PC, for the first time, I swear! The Epic Game Store is not real!
I do think a lot of peoples’ complaints about EGS are kinda dumb, but yeah, there’s no good reason KH should’ve not been on Steam in the first place. Squeenix is fucking hemorrhaging money and they decide to put KH on just EGS? That’s just being stupid.
PS4 RELEASE
Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin 06/14
This is out on Switch and PC already (a few years ago at this point). The first game is coming out, optionally, as part of a physical collection featuring both the first and second game, which is why the PS4 is getting this. I think PC isn’t getting that collection because… obviously… but PS4 and Switch are (first game on cart/disc, second game as a DLC code). Or you can just get the games separate.
Why PS4 though? I asked that question earlier in the post about the first game, but I guess I still don’t have the answer. Why are PS4 games even still being released, this is fucking stupid.
