Summer time! There’s maybe games I dunno! I won’t have much to talk about in the June post but I have played a few games, and have some commentary on the Xbox and Nintendo thing (and absolutely nothing to say about “Lizardman Geoff Keighley’s Stupid Show Made By A Hack” because holy shit was that a bad show).
So for July 2024 I’m highlighting: 7 multiplats, 7 Switch games, and 4 PC releases. It’s kind of a month without highlights, there’s just a few mid-level releases. I’m buying like 2 of these games, with a few maybes.
Disclaimer: I only list games that I think are worth mentioning. This includes games I’m personally interested in, games that will likely be popular, highly advertised games, some more niche stuff I may notice, and such. This is not just games I care about myself, I highlight as much as I think makes sense. Of course, I can’t see the future, so I may be missing games and I may be listing games that may get delayed.
MULTIPLATFORM RELEASES
The First Descendant 07/02 (PC, PS4, Xbone, PS5, Xbox X/S)
I watched a few videos of this and it gave me them Destiny vibes… Which are not vibes you should want you game to have because holy shit Destiny sucks. But that new kaiju Vtuber from VSPO seems interested in it so maybe I’ll check out her stream of it.
Zenless Zone Zero 07/04 (PC, PS5, Xbox X/S)
It’s the new Mihoyo waifu gacha money sink! I wasn’t a big fan of the previous ones. They weren’t bad, just not… good. This seems about on par with Genshin and Honkai. I looked at the characters and found Ellen so I might try it this game out because look at her.
The Legend of Heroes: Trails through Daybreak 07/05 (Switch, PC, PS4, Xbone, PS5, Xbox X/S)
’tis a new Trails game. I never played any of them because there’s so much in the series and how the fuck am I gonna play through all of them to get up to this current one… yeah fuck that 😀 It does look good at least, but I’m not jumping into what I already know is badly localized crap where I’ll be missing so many references to like 15 previous games in the series.
EvilVEvil 07/16 (PC, PS5, Xbox X/S)
PVE multiplayer shooter… Kinda like that First Descendant thing. Looks funner than First Descendant at least, it’s faster-paced and looks more… game-like? Also it has vampires. I assume no one will play this because the name is weird.
Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn 07/18 (PC, PS4, Xbone, PS5, Xbox X/S)
This is some action game thing, kinda gives me modern GoW vibes, but more generic and seemingly more RPG-ish elements. Not super interested, it’s a “maybe I’ll play it when it gets given away for free on Epic Game Store in a year” kinda game.
Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess 07/19 (PC, PS4, Xbone, PS5, Xbox X/S)
This was a really weird reveal by Capcom (I think during a state of play) with a trailer that gave no good indication of what the gameplay really was. We did recently get a gameplay trailer though and… This is genuinely interesting. It looks like a tower defense game, but with hack ‘n slash action gameplay. You have phases where you’re gathering resources, setting up defenses and stuff, and then enemies come out of portals which will clash with your defenses and you can directly fight them. I might check it out.
Earth Defense Force 6 07/25 (PC, PS4, PS5)
EDF! EDF! EDF! EDF! EDF! EDF! EDF! EDF! EDF!
Actually haven’t played one of these in a long time. The Gura thing kinda makes me want to pre-order.
SWITCH RELEASES
Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown 07/11
This came out 5 years ago on PS4, Xbone and PC. I haven’t really seen people talking about it so I don’t know what the fan opinion is on it. I liked 6 all the way back in 2007, and I know a lot of the ones between 6 and 7 (12 years apart) weren’t considered as good. I should check it out at some point, I assume since it came out 5 years ago that it goes on sale a bunch.
Fitness Boxing feat. Hatsune Miku 07/12
It’s Fitness Boxing, with Miku! Fitness Boxing 2 is still the one I prefer in the series, the Fist of the North Star one was kinda meh in comparison. This should be better.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Splintered Fate 07/17
A TMNT action roguelite. It doesn’t look very good. That’s really all I have to say on this one, the videos ain’t very good.
Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition 07/18
It’s not quite NES Remix, but it is kind of a different take on the same idea. It capitalizes on the nostalgia for the NWC from 1990. It doesn’t feature the same games as the original NWC (no Rad Racer or Tetris), but it does feature a bunch of speedrunning challenges for a bunch of NES Nintendo games. Looks like a fun little thing.
The New Denpa Men 07/22
This is a series I am not familiar with, it was some phone and I think 3DS thing where you captured these “Denpa Men” people in wifi signals or whatever. This one’s an RPG but you also build a village or something. Looks okay but not something I’m interested in.
Tokyo Xanadu EX+ 07/25
This was I think on Vita at first, let’s see… Yeah, I think I have this in fact. Basically the latest in the Xanadu spin-off of the Dragon Slayer series (you may remember Faxanadu on NES, it’s related to that… it’s also related to the Trails game, it’s a very weird series). It got a PS4/PC release with its EX version, and now just a Switch port of that I guess. It’s very standard action RPG, kinda weird “9 years later for some reason” re-release.
One Piece Odyssey 07/26
This came out early last year on other platforms. I played through it, it was okay, it had some interesting gameplay, though fairly simplistic story-wise (a story unique to the game, but it goes through memories of various events from the main story).
PC RELEASES
Once Human 07/09
This is a massively multiplayer survival shooter… thing? The trailer on the website shows a walking house which was pretty cool… The gameplay itself doesn’t look good.
Anger Foot 07/11
It’s an boomer FPS where you kick shit and shoot shit and it’s really fast-paced and in your face and colorful. Looks kinda cool.
Gestalt: Steam & Cinder 07/16
I had this in a previous month recently. Don’t remember when. Game devs just aren’t good at announcing release dates. I’m not gonna repeat what I recently said, and hope it does actually come out this time.
Riviera: The Promised Land – Remaster 07/17
I remember this from the GBA, though I found out just now that this was originally on Wonderswan Color, and it got an enhanced version on PSP. This was a pretty cool Japanese RPG that had a lot of hype, I remember it being very solid. Might be worth revisiting.
