Video Games coming out in September 2024

August had a bunch of stuff, for me at least. Some stuff that was even good! I’ll talk about those in the august gaming update, but it was pretty nice for me.

For September 2024 I am highlighting: 19 multiplats, 1 Switch game, 5 PC games and… hey look a PS5 game too! It’s not a bad month overall, there’s 8 of these I’m probably buying at/around launch (depending on what I’m playing), and like 5 maybes. That’s a lot. Very few of these are big massive games, but I think they’re pretty cool.

Let’s go!

Disclaimer: I only list games that I think are worth mentioning. This includes games I’m personally interested in, games that will likely be popular, highly advertised games, some more niche stuff I may notice and such. This is not just games I care about myself, I highlight as much as I think makes sense. Of course, I can’t see the future, so I may be missing games and I may be listing games that may get delayed.

MULTIPLATFORM RELEASES

Bakeru 09/03 (Switch, PC)
Mameda no Bakeru
This is that one game I already mini-reviewed made by the creator of the Goemon series. It’s good. My worry was that a localization would be bad because localizers are racists, and this game is VERY japanese. The trailer I saw for the localized english version had almost no text/dialogue in it, but the little that was there had incorrect stuff going on (or just made-up bullshit like them attempting to localize “どすこい” (dosukoi)… which they shouldn’t) so that’s not a great sign for the localization. Ignoring the story and dialogue though, the gameplay’s fun and they’re adding a few minor things to the game like new attacks and bosses. So I do recommend this one either way.

Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions 09/03 (PC, PS4, Xbone, PS5, Xbox X/S)
Quidditch champions
Quidditch is a stupid game when it comes to its overall design, but I guess it makes sense for video game versions of it to come out. The gameplay for this looks awkward as hell though. I’ll give a big meh to this one.

Age of Mythology: Retold 09/04 (PC, Xbone, Xbox X/S)
Age of Mythology: Retold
A remake of the first Age of Mythology. Not an RTS I played but one that I always thought looked cool. This has a bunch of changes to things mechanically (such as Villager Priority), balance-wise and content-wise. Should be pretty solid.

Gimmick 2 09/05 (Switch, PC)
Gimmick 2
Sunsoft have been doing a bunch of stuff recently (in this case they’re the publishers), but this might be one of the more interesting ones. Gimmick is, technically, one of the best games on NES due to its gameplay concept, physics engine (yes really) and graphical prowess. It took quite a while for official releases to start popping up in the west outside of Scandinavia but it was popular regardless because of rom sites. This sequel has more modern cartoony graphics and what seems like very similar gameplay to the original, with some new mechanics. Looks fun!

Ace Attorney Investigations Collection 09/06 (Switch, PC, PS4, Xbone, PS5, Xbox X/S)
Ace Attorney Investigations Collection
This features both of the AAI games, which is notable because the sequel never came out in the west so now we’re finally getting it (very confusingly considering AA is very popular in the west). I remember exactly none of the first game since it’s fucking old at this point, but I remember enjoying it back when it came out. This is a cool release that I probably won’t get, at least right away.

SUNSOFT is Back! Retro Game Selection 09/06 (Switch, PC, PS5, Xbox X/S)
SUNSOFT is Back! Retro Game Selection
Speaking of Sunsoft… Now this is a kinda-weird-kinda-fun release. It’s not overpriced (13$ on Steam, so not bad), but this is a small collection of classic famicom game by Sunsoft that never came out in the west: Wing of Madoola, Tokaido 53 Tsugi and Ripple Island. Wing of Madoola and the Tokaido travel game are pretty cool. They’re hard platformers, with their own fair share of kinda weird cryptic shit (especially Tokaido, from what I recall). Ripple Island I am not familiar with at all but it looks to be a point-and-click adventure game similar to Famicom Detective Club, so that’s interesting. And they’re translated to English which I hope is a decent translation. Should be worth checking out!

Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 09/09 (PC, PS5, Xbox X/S)
Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2
I never ended up playing the first Space Marine but it gets a lot of hype and looks solid. This looks very similar, from what I’ve seen. Looks like a fun TPS that doesn’t rely on a cover system (which is good because cover-based shooters are lame). I’m keeping this on the maybe list, I’ll see what the fanbase thinks about it.

Yars Rising 09/10 (Switch, PC, PS4, Xbone, PS5, Xbox X/S)

Yars’ Revenge, Yar’s Revenge, and now Yars Rising… This series has a weird title scheme going on. And a weird gameplay scheme too, considering the first is a single-screen shooter with unique elements, Yar’s Revenge is a Star Fox-style rail-shooter, and now Yars Rising is a side-scrolling platforming metroidvania with upgrades and stealth elements. This is made by Wayforward, I’m pretty curious about it. Yars’ Revenge is probably my favorite Atari 2600 game so I look forward to seeing playing this.

Rugrats: Adventures in Gameland 09/10 (NES (at some point), Switch, PS4, Xbone, Xbox X/S)
Rugrats: Adventures in Gameland
Huh, I did have this in a previous list, they were pretty shitty about announcing release dates for this (they previously had a month announced, but I guess that never came true).
This is a new NES game coming out, based on Rugrats. The NES version is unfortunately released by shit-company Limited Run Games, so it’s never gonna be buyable. Fuck LRG.
The game itself looks fun, The gameplay looks like a take on the NES classic Rescue Rangers with multiple playable characters, and you can switch the graphics from the NES version to a nice HD version where the characters look like they’re right out of the show.

Lollipop Chainsaw RePOP 09/12 (PC, Switch, PS5, Xbox X/S)
Lollipop Chainsaw RePOP
Lollipop Chainsaw is something of a classic at this point. It was pretty fun, it had a lot of style and solid action gameplay. This version will have different music (because licensing), slightly clearer graphics, apparently some improved gameplay.

Marvel vs Capcom Fighting Collection 09/13 (PC, Switch, PS4)
Marvel vs Capcom Fighting Collection
This is the entire pre-3 MvC “series”, including MvC1, MvC2, Children of the Atom, Marvel Super Heroes, X-Men vs Street Fighter, Marvel Super Heroes vs Street Fighter and… The Punisher? A bit random… MVC2 is obviously the one people are hyped about most with its previous removal from PSN and XBLA… Also bringing up questions about how long this will be available because of that situation, so if you want to be safe grab it on Steam so all your future PCs can access it 🙂

Demonschool 09/13 (Switch, PC, PS4, Xbone, PS5, Xbox X/S)
Demonschool
This is a tactical RPG where you play as teenagers in a school, fighting demons. The gameplay looks pretty interesting, it’s been on my “interested” list for a long time. There is a demo but I haven’t tried it, I should.

The Plucky Squire 09/17 (Switch, PC, PS5, Xbox X/S)
The Plucky Squire
This has been on my radar for a while. It’s an action adventure game featuring Zelda-like gameplay… sometimes. It’s a 2D action adventure game in a book, but you can get out of the book where the game starts in and explore a 3D world (a room, specifically) and there’s a variety of gameplay styles, from platforming to… Punch-Out? This game looks super interesting and I’m definitely getting it at launch.

Enotria: The Last Song 09/19 (PC, PS5, Xbox X/S)
Enotria: The Last Song
This is an action game that gives Souls vibes (what a surprise!) where you can change masks to change your ability loadouts on-the-fly. Sounds interesting enough, it’s a bit of a “wait and see” for me.

Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster 09/19 (PC, PS5, Xbox X/S)

Dead Rising gets a re-release for some reason, but they censor stuff because… why not? I guess? And the graphics are technically better but look more boring IMO. Yeah I dunno about this one. The original is on Steam for 10$. Just buy that. I’m putting this in the “stupid release” category. Don’t re-release games that don’t need re-releasing.

The Karate Kid: Street Rumble 09/20 (Switch, PC, PS4, Xbone, PS5, Xbox X/S)
The Karate Kid: Street Rumble
This is a SNES-style Beat ’em Up where you play as Mr. Miyagi and… absolutely no one else, because of course you’d pick to play as Mr. Miyagi and ignore the other characters. It looks pretty average as far as the genre goes and… Why now? This just feels really random.

Disney Epic Mickey: Rebrushed 09/24 (Switch, PC, PS4, Xbone, PS5, Xbox X/S)
Disney Epic Mickey: Rebrushed
Epic Mickey is a game I found to be kinda meh. Not bad, just nothing impressive. A bit of a weird title to remaster IMO. At least a more sensible remaster than Daed Rising considering the first Epic Mickey is still stuck on the Wii (on a similar note, remastering the sequel would be dumb since that is on Steam).

Earth Defense Force: World Brothers 2 09/26 (Switch, PS4, PS5)
Earth Defense Force: World Brothers 2
It’s EDF but with voxel characters or something. I heard nothing about the original but I guess it did well enough to warrant a sequel. I have no interest in this 😀

REYNATIS 09/27 (PC, Switch, PS4, PS5)
REYNATIS
This is an action RPG of some description. The trailers for it make it look kinda stiff and weird but it’s kinda hard to say. And the graphics and animations make it seems like it came right out of a PS2… but at higher resolution. I’ll have a look at real gameplay once it comes out, might be interesting but I’m not too sure.

SWITCH RELEASE

The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom 09/26
The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom

Zelda but you play as Zelda! And instead of just giving her Link’s moveset, she gets the magical power to copy objects and enemies and summon them, either for combat or puzzle-solving. It actually looks really fun.

PC RELEASES

Satisfactory 09/10
Satisfactory

This has been in early access for 4 years but this is the actual full release date. Everything I know about this game I know from Let’s Game It Out videos, you basically build a giant factory and try to be efficient and discover new tech trees or whatever. If you’re into this kind of game it looks solid.

Final Fantasy 16 09/17
Final Fantasy XVI

A bit over a year later after apparently not reaching expectations on the PS5, it’s coming to PC. This game was originally built for PC (in fact the announcement trailer was of the PC version) so it was only a matter of time… Though there was NO fanfare for this release announcement, Squeenix really just made a tweet… And put a demo on Steam so at least there’s that. The demo is the introduction of the game, which took me ~2 hours to go through and almost none of that was actual gameplay… So I can’t tell if this might be good or not (there’s a mode that unlocks after that I didn’t play). The intro isn’t impressive but it might get better after. I’m not super convinced about this one.

UFO 50 09/18
UFO 50

This is a modern take on an absolute classic. The classic in question being… Action 52. Buy one game, but get 50 games! This is made by people who made Spelunky and Downwell. These are apparently not microgames, but full-on experiences. Some arcade-style stuff, there’s at least one RPG, some open world things and whatever they felt like making I guess. I’m assuming they’re still small-ish games generally, but this is such a cool idea. I will grab this and report back.
Looking for the thumbnail here I found an image that said “coming in 2018”… So this has been in the works for a while it seems.

God of War Ragnarok 09/19
God of War Ragnarok

The new God of War on PS4 was one that I kinda enjoyed playing in the moment, but the more I thought about it, the less I liked it and its vapid cinematic style and combat that has some design issues. It’s just kind of a weak game overall despite being very nice visually (which is where most of the hype actually comes from)… So once the sequel came out, I had little interest remaining for Dad of War, so I skipped the PS4 version… and I’ll also skip the PC version.

Frostpunk 2 09/20
Frostpunk 2

Pretty sure I had this on a previous list. So this was delayed I guess. Frostpunk is a cool-looking strategy game I never played, so I don’t have much to comment about here other than “this one also looks cool” and it’s an interesting concept for both gameplay and world. Maybe one day I’ll convince myself to try this or the previous one out. I legit have the first one on Epic Game Store, probably because it was free at some point.

PS5 RELEASE

Astro Bot 09/06
Astro Bot

The tech demo guy is finally getting a proper game that is real and not VR. It has a lot of playstation references and the gameplay that looks pretty fun, reminds me of Mario 3D World. I might grab it at a discount on PC eventually.
