Well I got 20 minutes left before 2025 so… gotta get hyped for games coming out in 2025! … Hopefully 2025 delivers a bit better than 2024 did because oof.
I’m just gonna do the usual, just talk about my top-most-hyped-for-now games, and then big lists of games I have some level of interest in (or have the potential of being good), and a smaller list of games that are big releases that I don’t think are interesting (and have no potential of being good).
Top games I’m probably excited for
There’s an actually big amount of games I’m interested for in 2024, but finding the ones that deserve a highlight is a different story. But there’s some fun things that I figured out were probably the top interesting games. I tried to have a bit of a balance between sequels and new IPs, I think there’s some cool stuff here.
Doom: The Dark Ages
DOOM. 2016 was fantastic. Eternal decided that it needed to be way more frantic and made it a fast-paced FPS where you have to manage resources and dodge/kill a ton of enemies strategically at the same time. Eternal manages to be way better than 2016, somehow. The DOOM reboot series has been one of the rare examples of old series managing to not get completely ruined by modern western devs getting their claws on it.
They’ve not shown anything about this game after the initial gameplay trailer, but said trailer was absolutely badass and I can’t wait to play it. The new weapons look fun as hell.
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33
This was announced at some Xbox presentation. It is a console-style turn-based RPG. Visually it looks fantastic, and the combat looks fun. I don’t have too much to say about this one since I haven’t seen too much of the underlying systems. but I feel it’s a type of modern RPG they don’t make much of anymore, as companies seem more focused on making action-RPGs than turn-based ones. I hope it ends up being as good as it looks.
Metroid Prime 4: Beyond
It’s a new Metroid Prime. We haven’t seen too much of it from the trailer Nintendo released, but it looks fantastic already. I can’t wait to finally play this.
To note, this is not the same Metroid Prime 4 that was announced in 2017. That game was cancelled in 2019 and this one has been in development, from scratch, since then. Some people think there was some development hell, but that is a fairly standard modern game development cycle (unfortunately). People are just impatient, and unaware of how game development tends to go.
Now hopefully Retro Studios can start releasing other shit because holy fuck it’s been a while since their previous game, Tropical Freeze.
Monster Hunter Wilds
MH Rise was my first time giving this series a real fair shake, and I very much enjoyed it. I tried the beta for this one and it was very solid. I like being able to switch weapons, and the overall combat is as good as usual, and I like the more “open-world” concept of it where the camp is within where you’re also hunting and you just walk around the world fighting monsters in a more natural way. This just looks like it’s really good.
Ninja Gaiden Ragebound
It’s been quite a while since a new Ninja Gaiden. Especially since a side-scrolling Ninja Gaiden. This is coming from the makers of Blasphemous, published by DotEmu who published several cool retro-revivals like Street of Rage 4. This does give some classic 2D Ninja Gaiden vibes, but also some classic Strider vibes a little bit. It has different kinds of attacks and platforming techniques and shit. It looks so fucking good.
Showa American Story
Just watch this trailer. This game looks fucking insane. I must play this.
Slay the Spire 2
Slay the Spire was fantastic. I looked into this game… just enough to find that image. I don’t need to look into it more than that. I’ll definitely play this.
Spine: This is Gun Fu
I saw a few gameplay videos of this and it looks absolutely crazy. It’s an game where you gun fu the shit out of people with a ton of crazy-ass moves that have really cool animations. I think the combat has some Arkham inspirations. This looks fun as fuck.
Abyss X Zero
I saw a few trailers for this one and it looks really fun. It gives some Mega Man Legends vibes (especially visually), with both ranged combat and melee combat with blocking/parrying and stuff. I love the style, the gameplay looks really cool, and it’s exactly the kind of shit I’m into.
Nintendo Switch 2 (name pending maybe)
The Switch 2 is coming, probably sooner than we may think. It might be the most leaked thing ever, if even 1% of the “leaks” it gets are real. The picture above is from dbrand, a reputable company that make cases and skins and such. They have to be very confident about the design of the console if they’re announcing this case design already, and it features elements one previous “leak” also had so that one was probably real too. There’s a lot of other leaks that are probably bullshit, and latching onto each other in an attempt to gain relevance, so I’d disbelieve anything unofficial after the dbrand announcement. The only real information we have from the few credible leaks is that it’s a bit bigger and has an extra button below the home button on the right joy-con, which makes the “leaks” kinda lame anyways. Nothing particularly interesting is shown.
But the facts that we know for sure are that the Switch successor is gonna be a Switch but stronger, which makes all sorts of sense, and that it will be backwards compatible, which actually doesn’t really matter in the grand scheme of things. There was an Nvidia leak that had what may be the chip and features of the Switch 2, though it’s possible that the final SOC is something different because said leak is kinda old at this point. Though clearly they’ll be leveraging DLSS, and likely will surpass PS4 (possibly even PS4 Pro), which is fine for a Nintendo handheld.
The most important thing is games, and, right now, we know none (I believe Prime 4 will be a Switch 2 game, maybe one of the rare Nintendo cross-gen games). So we’ll see if anything interesting actually comes out of that. Either way, it’ll be nice for the Switch to not be completely weak.
Other games I’m interested in
These are not all games I will get, some of them are there because I find them interesting even if I likely won’t play them. Basically this is games I think will be pretty good and are probably interesting.
