Man I have so much to review still. Just got the Pokemon review out, I have Star Ocean and Harvestella reviews on the go (coming eventually), and I just started Evil West, I haven’t started Valkyrie Elysium yet (taking a slight break from RPGs), and I’ll need to get Gungrave and Front Mission 1st: Remake and maybe The Knight Witch and whatever the shit’s coming out in December… busy busy busy. Might need to move things around as far as what I’ll play/review… I don’t NEED The Knight Witch.
But yeah, there’s stuff coming out in December. Decembers are usually relegated to smaller releases, maybe one big one on one of the systems but it’s never super busy. This isn’t much different, but there’s still a bunch of potentially good stuff and at least one game I’m really excited about. So this time I’m highlighting: 13 multiplats, 2 Switch games and 1 PC game. As for what I’ll be buying/reviewing from these, there’s ONE “for sure ASAP”, and 7-8 games that are at varying levels of maybe.
Disclaimer: I only list games that I think are worth mentioning. This includes games I’m personally interested in, games that will likely be popular, highly advertised games, some more niche stuff I may notice, and such. Not just games I care about myself, I highlight as much as I think makes sense. And of course, I can’t see the future, so I may be missing games and I may be listing games that may get delayed.
MULTIPLATFORM RELEASES
Romancing SaGa: Minstrel Song Remastered 12/02 (Switch, PC, PS4, PS5)
SaGa continues getting some support, which is nice. I’m actually 0% knowledgeable about Romancing SaGa. I was confused as to why it was called a Remaster, but then I realized this is actually a remaster of the PS2 remake of this. And that remake actually came out in America, that completely slipped past me. This kinda has to be on the maybe list for me right now even though I’m interested, since I have so much shit to play, but I’m hoping to get into this one.
The Callisto Protocol 12/02 (PC, PS4, Xbone, PS5, Xbox X/S)
This is a space-based horror game with aliens and shit. Looks pretty cool from what I’ve seen. Not sure about the actually horror/scary aspect, but it looks playable. The Dead Space inspirations are pretty obvious.
Marvel’s Midnight Suns 12/02 (PC, PS4, Xbone, PS5, Xbox X/S)
This is a card-based Marvel strategy game by the creators of XCOM. Seems maybe-possibly good. I find it pretty hard to say based on the videos that are out for it now. Seems movement is pretty much like XCOM, but it seems you can only do attacks if you have the cards for them or something in hand? I’m really not sure, I haven’t looked too deep into it.
Also, Switch version is later.
Need for Speed Unbound 12/02 (PC, PS5, Xbox X/S)
I didn’t even realize this was announced. It didn’t make a big splash. I haven’t heard much good about NFS in a really long time, and it’s an EA game, so this is squarely on the “do not buy” list.
Hello Neighbor 2 12/06 (PC, PS4, Xbone, PS5, Xbox X/S)
The first Hello Neighbor was a game with an kinda cute premise, that feels like it went full weird with its lore because they seemingly got worried about Game Theory. I dunno, overall this wasn’t one that seemed all that interesting to me in the first game, and still doesn’t.
Samurai Maiden 12/08 (Switch, PC, PS4, PS5)
This is one of these “animu girl with sword kicking ass” kind of action game. The character models and overall graphical style look really good. Not super sure about the gameplay, looks pretty okay but nothing special as far as this “genre” goes. I will forget this exists in no time.
Adventure Academia: The Fractured Continent 12/09 (Switch, PC, PS4)
I don’t know why game companies are so shit at announcing their release dates. There’s no reason I should be finding “official” release dates for MONTHS with none of the dates ever being legitimate. This I think I’ve had dates for since September I think, maybe earlier. I will note this date actually is legitimate unless they change their mind again.
Reviews are kinda negative for this, but I’m still interested because it’s a new Class of Heroes game.
High on Life 12/13 (PC, Xbone, Xbox X/S)
This is the game with the Morty gun that won’t shut up. I’m actually pretty curious about the gameplay for this one, some things I’ve seen actually look kinda interesting. You play as a bounty hunter that uses very talkative weapons to hunt aliens, I dunno, sounds interesting. It’s on the “probably” list.
Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Reunion 12/13 (PC, Switch, PS4, Xbone, PS5, Xbox X/S)
I played Crisis Core on PSP. I remember basically nothing about it. What I remember is that I liked it… which isn’t very concrete. This looks way better graphically though, seems to have much the same gameplay systems from the old one. It’s on the maybe list alongside plenty of other stuff.
Akai Katana Shin 12/15 (Switch, PS4, Xbone)
This was a pretty cool arcade shmup that I actually got on the Xbox 360. I honestly don’t remember what made this one stand apart from all the other ones that the 360 got (the 360 was weirdly a great system for bullet hell shmups, it had so many). It’s a good one though.
Azure Striker Gunvolt 3 12/15 (PS4, PS5)
There, now it’s out on everything. It’s a pretty okay game, I have not reviewed it though because I didn’t really have much to say about it.
Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth 12/22 (PS4, PS5)
Why the shit did they delay a port of an old game so much? This was meant to be out alongside Valkyrie Elysium, but it missed that, and then was delayed almost 3 months for some reason. Anyways, cool game, check it out if you haven’t.
River City Girls 2 (MAYBE?) 12/??
This was supposed to come out in Summer 2022. It was pushed to “who the fuck knows when 2022”. Japan then got a December 1st release date (which, as far as I can find, is still happening), so I assume we’ll have something similar? That’s in just a few days though. I continue my complaint about game companies being shit at announcing release dates. If it’s coming out at the same time as the japanese version that you seemingly haven’t delayed, just fucking announce it.
That said, first was pretty fun, this should be pretty fun too.
SWITCH RELEASES
Dragon Quest Treasures 12/09
This is one of my most hyped games this year! More Dragon Quest! It’s coming out here despite not being a mainline game which is crazy! This feels like it might have been some form of Dragon Quest Monsters at some point (as it has some of those features like training monsters), with a different concept with the treasure hunting. The little I’ve looked at of this looked really interesting, I hope it’s good. This is my one “GETTING AT LAUNCH FOR SURE AND GIVING PRIORITY TO” game for December.
Sports Story 12/??
The early Switch days had this game called Golf Story that was pretty okay. It was a Golf-focused game with heavy RPG elements, with a story to it rather than just being a normal golf game. Sports Story takes on the same idea but adds all sorts of sports/activities. I’m not really sure how excited I am for this.
It’s meant to be out in December, but hey here’s me complaining about game companies being shit at announcing their release dates. Why is it so hard for some of them?
PC RELEASE
Choo-Choo Charles 12/09
This is one of those indie horror game things that are pretty wacky and stupid. I saw a bit of gameplay for this at some point and it actually looked kinda interesting. Not the kind of game I’d play, I assume it will be pretty dumb, but I dunno, I thought it was interesting enough to highlight.
