Games coming out in June 2021

Got a few reviews posted in May, and I actually have 2 more that I’m writing right now and a few games that I’m playing as well that I’ll review… not counting all the stuff I’m getting in June. Things are going pretty great writing-wise.

So June is E3 month, and E3 isn’t being skipped this year. I already talked about how weird it is for E3 to exist anymore. I have basically no excitement for E3 or its weird app thing. But hey, there could be some fun announcements. So there’s possible hype there, maybe. I prefer to go in with zero expectations.

Other than E3, June is a pretty exciting month games-wise this year, surprisingly. I’m buying at least 7 new games, with still a few “maybe” games too. It’s actually pretty crazy. So in June we’re gonna be seeing: 11 multiplats, 6 Switch releases, 3 PS5 releases and 3 PC releases. There’s some really cool stuff here.

Let’s go!

Disclaimer: I only list games that I think are worth mentioning. This includes games I’m personally interested in, games that will likely be popular, highly advertised games, small interesting ones I may notice and such. Not just games I care about myself, I highlight as much as I think makes sense. And of course I can’t see the future, so I may be missing games and I may be listing games that may get delayed.

MULTIPLATFORM RELEASES

Necromunda: Hired Gun 06/01 (PC, PS4, Xbone, PS5, Xbox X/S)

This is an FPS that looks really fun, based on the Warhammer 40K universe. You play as a hired gun in Necromunda, as per the title. It gives impressions of modern DOOM combined with getting loot upgrades. I’m quite interested in this one, looks like a blast.

Ghosts ‘n Goblins Resurrection 06/01 (PC, PS4, Xbone)

This is the new GnG that came to Switch earlier this year. It’s pretty good. I haven’t reviewed it yet because I haven’t beaten it yet… might do an impressions post, I dunno.
It’s weirdly hard, even for GnG, but also it has difficulty levels because devs don’t believe in the consumer enough for them to be able to handle challenge anymore (note: no, challenge isn’t an accessibility issue… I might rant about this at some point). One of the difficulty levels literally doesn’t let you die, it’s absolutely stupid. Overall a pretty fun game from what I’ve managed to play so far. Maybe I’ll review it one day if I have time to play it. Other games are just taking priority.

Mighty Goose 06/05 (Switch, PC, PS4, Xbone)

This is a side-scrolling platformer that seems to be inspired by Metal Slug, where you play as a goose in a mech. Looks like some wacky fun.

Ninja Gaiden Master Collection 06/10 (Switch, PC, PS4, Xbone)

The first Ninja Gaiden reboot game is great. 2 is okay. And the original release of 3… was garbage. So this pack includes the Sigma versions of 1 and 2, and the Razor’s Edge version of 3. I hear the Razor’s Edge version of 3 was a big improvement, I didn’t want to give it a chance after playing 3 myself. This is a fun little pack, I’m not particularly interested in playing these again for now but it’s good that it exists. Definitely worth checking out if you missed these.

Guilty Gear Strive 06/11 (PC, PS4, PS5)

It’s more Guilty Gear. This one looks really good as usual. I don’t really get into fighting games much anymore, because when I buy them I just end up never playing it because I only play it with friends, and that just happens less and less often.

Dungeons & Dragons: Dark Alliance 06/22 (PC, PS4, Xbone, Xbox X/S, PS5)

A 4-player co-op action RPG where you can play as 4 well-known DnD characters with their own gameplay style. It looks okay. I dunno if I’m getting this, I feel if I do it’s gonna be because a bunch of friends also got it and want to play multiplayer.

Legend of Mana Remastered 06/24 (Switch, PC, PS4)

This is a remake of the classic PS1 game that I never played. It has updated graphics and some nice quality of life improvements. Looks good, can’t wait to finally play it.

Alex Kidd in Miracle World DX 06/24 (Switch, PC, PS4, Xbone)

It’s the first Alex Kidd. It looks HD. Fun. Would be nice for a new Alex Kidd game to get made, as there hasn’t been a new one since 1990. Maybe if this does well it might convince Sega to revive their old mascot.

Scarlet Nexus 06/25 (PC, PS4, Xbone, Xbox S/X, PS5)

It’s animu JRPG BS… I didn’t inform myself on this one much, just watched a few trailers and it looks like it could be pretty fun. Will buy it because it’s animu JRPG BS. There’s an anime for this too that I wouldn’t watch because lol anime based on games.

Cotton Reboot 06/26 (Switch, PS4)

Cotton is a classic arcade shmup (occasionally referred to as a “cute ’em up”), well know for its great X68000 PC port and being a series that kept going for a while afterwards. I actually have one of these, Cotton 100% on Super Famicom. This is a remaster based on the X68000 port, and it looks pretty awesome. A bit expensive in 2021 for a shmup, but I’ll definitely end up grabbing it at some point… on sale.

Lucasfilm Classic Games: Zombies Ate My Neighbors and Ghoul Patrol 06/29 (Switch, PC, PS4, Xbone)

Zombies Ate My Neighbors is an absolute classic. It’s pretty great, and super hard as well. Finding all these neighbors is really hard, and you have a limited amount so if you lose one to zombies in a level, you lose that neighbor forever. Great, great game. A cool co-op experience as well. Ghoul Patrol is a pseudo-sequel to ZAMN, and it’s nowhere near as good, it feels like a cheap knockoff, and I don’t recommend it outside of curiousity. Probably not getting this version, but it’s super cool for this package to exist.
Now make a sequel.

SWITCH RELEASES

DC Super Hero Girls 06/02

What even is this? This is apparently an actual cartoon where the DC characters go to high school or something? The graphical style looks like they smear literal garbage on screen, it’s so ugly, and it’s even uglier in the game. As for the game, it seems pretty cheap, I dunno man. Doesn’t look superb overall. Weird thing, Nintendo is actually publishing this. Why?

Game Builder Garage 06/11

This was apparently part of one of the Nintendo Labo things, I wouldn’t know. It’s a thing where you can program games (and seemingly can make a decent variety of gameplay styles) with some simple pseudocode-style programming where you create objects and actions for them, and you can create your own assets too, to a point. Might be interesting, I see it as something really cool for kids and it’s not something I care about in the least myself.

Mario Golf Super Rush 06/25

It’s Mario Golf. I actually never played one of these, strangely enough. I was always more into Mario Tennis. This one does actually have a story mode of sorts with some RPG elements, it seems. So I think this may be my first Mario Golf. It seems to be lacking in some areas compared to some of the previous ones (such as courses), but it should be decent anyways.

Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2 06/25

I haven’t grabbed this on anything else yet, even though I meant to. Maybe I’ll get it on Switch, at some point, when there’s not so many other games to play.

Disgaea 6: Defiance of Destiny 06/29

Feels like a good long while since Disgaea 5, I’m quite happy to finally have a new one. This did come out on PS4 in Japan, but I’m guessing NIS didn’t want to deal with Sony of California’s censorship of anime-style games for the worldwide release, so it’s only on Switch here. Previous Disgaea games had a max level of 9999, this one decided that that’s too low and instead gives you a max level of 99999999 and stats can go into the quadrillions. Because lol. This game looks really fun, though I am pretty curious about the new graphical style since Disgaea is usually 2D sprites. And if you’re into hololive, one of the free DLC packs includes hololive-inspired characters (they’re all based on existing classes, the Fubuki-Prinny is perfect).

Destroy All Humans! 06/29

This HD remaster was released on other things before. No idea if this is actually supposed to be good, I don’t remember it being a big deal back in it’s original release, and I’ve heard nothing from people who played the remaster. Not sure if anyone cares.

PS5 RELEASES

Neptunia ReVerse 06/08

It’s a remake of Hyperdimension Neptunia Re;Birth1, which is itself a remake of the first Neptunia game. Why is this even a thing?

FF7 Remake but this time Yuffie’s there for a short DLC thingy I guess 06/10

Why am I highlighting this? It’s just the same game with DLC thrown in. If you have the PS4 version you get the PS5 version upgrade for free (which is why I wouldn’t usually even highlight this)… except if you’re doing the version upgrade, you need to pay extra for the Yuffie DLC. LOL.
I’m still waiting for this game to actually come out, I’m not jumping in when only a small part of it is out. People whine about DLC being content that should be in the full game, but this game is missing over half the game itself, with mere parts being sold as full-priced games… Ridiculous. I’ll get it when it comes out on PC, for no more than 60$ for the whole thing. If I have to wait another 10 years, that’s fine by me.

Ratchet and Clank Rift Apart 06/11

The PS5 finally has a big game! W00! And we’re up to 2 games I would actually buy if I got a PS5… Need more for me to want to even consider buying a PS5, but a step is a step.
I really don’t have much to say about the new Ratchet. It’s just more Ratchet, those games are great fun.

PC RELEASES

Edge of Eternity 06/08

This is a big console-style RPG made by a tiny team of less than 20 people. It looks kind of interesting. I don’t know if I’ll get this myself (yet), but sometimes it’s fun to highlight ambitious projects like this.

Roguebook 06/17

The name Richard Garfield should sound familiar. He’s just the guy who designed the popular card game ever. And some pretty great board games like King of Tokyo and Robo Rally. And a few other cool things. He’s a pretty big deal. I mention that because Roguebook is partly designed by Mr Garfield here.
I do have this pre-ordered and played the demo for it, it’s a pretty interesting card-based Roguelite game you move around a board in some interesting ways to find equipment and cards to get stronger and try to fight really tough bosses. I think this should be pretty cool.

Wonder Boy: Asha in Monster World 06/29

I stupidly missed when this got a release date for Switch and PS4 (which is out in a couple days as of this writing). I won’t miss it here… just to compensate for my mistake last month.
This is a new version of Monster World 4, which was a japan-only Genesis game in the Wonder Boy series. It’s pretty good, it did semi-recently get a port on I think PS3. This version has pretty nice 3D graphics, not sure if there’s any other notable changes, but either way this is a good game. Also if you manage to get a physical version it will include the Genesis version in it or something. But not on the digital versions, because… dumb?
