Overlord: Escape from Nazarick review

Overlord: Escape from Nazarick

Overlord: Escape from Nazarick

While isekai anime is this thing that people think is just bad because there’s so much of it, Overlord happens to be one that I think is a pretty good example of the genre. It does have some of the normal points some of the really bad ones have, namely that the protagonist is overly powerful, but it handles the world itself and the goal of that main character very differently, and is overall really fun.

This game is based on the light novel/anime, but it’s something of a non-canon entry. I was curious about the metroidvania aspect of it, and the kinda-weird character choice.

Let’s see if it’s good!

Should I even review Warriors games anymore?

Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes

Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes

I like Warriors games. I don’t get all the ones that came out because there’s too much, but one every year or two is pretty nice. Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes is the latest one. I finished one of the (at least) 3 storylines. And I just don’t really feel like reviewing it. Because, in my time reviewing, I’ve reviewed many a Warriors game. And those reviews all describe the exact same base game, with pretty minor alterations. And those minor alterations… I don’t know if they’re worth reviewing.

Three Hopes is a standard Warriors game, but with the FE: Three Houses class system, a similar version of the relationship system (though the payoff isn’t quite as good as in Three Houses), and otherwise the gameplay is fairly standard Warriors with the order system FE Warriors had so your teammates can be semi-useful. The performance is definitely better than Age of Calamity though, so that’s nice. And this one doesn’t have a substantial post-game like some of the other Warriors games on Switch, instead focusing on restarting from the beginning and doing alternate stories, so it might be for you content-wise if you’re a completionist.

I think Three Hopes is a top-tier Warriors game, though objectively some of the others are probably a bit better (namely Hyrule Warriors Definitive Edition has way more stuff in it).

But Musou is Musou. You don’t need reviews to know if you’ll like Musou games. If you liked previous Warriors, you’ll like this. If you didn’t, this won’t convince you otherwise. If you’re not familiar with Musou… Just get one that is licensed to something you like and try it out.

Neon White review

neon white

This was shown at a Nintendo Direct and it instantly got my attention. A fast FPS with an interesting card system for weaponry. It wasn’t entirely clear to me if it was some kind of roguelite or if it was a level-based game, but I knew I’d be getting it on release.

It got a release date during not-E3 2022, and I bought it the moment it released. Let’s see if it was worth me getting excited for it!

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge review

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder's Revenge

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder's Revenge

I feel it’s been quite a while since we got a good Turtles game. The last I played is Mutants in Manhattan, by Platinum Games in 2016. That game sucked balls, unfortunately. This, however, is hell-bent on bringing back the classic style of TMNT games in the NES and SNES era, either from the arcades or home consoles. And it looked great in the 2 trailers I saw. And it’s Tribute Games who made good shit before. And DotEmu who has been responsible for publishing very good shit as well. So it certainly had my interest.

Let’s see if it’s good!

Metal Max Xeno Reborn review

Metal Max Xeno Reborn

Metal Max Xeno Reborn

I know basically nothing about the Metal Max series. I know it’s long-running, I believe originally from the Famicom. I believe the only game in the series to have made its way to the West before Xeno (and Xeno Reborn) is Metal Saga on PS2, a game I did not play (it does look pretty interesting). I know they’re these cool RPGs where you build tanks and explore a post-apocalyptic kinda world, but I never played any of them, until now. The only thing I know is that the sequel to Metal Max Xeno Reborn was just cancelled like a week ago, so that’s fun.

So anyways, let’s see what I’ve been missing, and see if this game is good! I hear it’s the worst in the series, so… yeah.

Biomotor Unitron review

Biomotor Unitron

This is the second time I grab one of these Neo Geo Pocket games on Switch, last time being the Capcom SNK card game which was a cool little game. Neo Geo Pocket is a set of platforms that were WAY out of my radar back in the day, so there’s a bunch of possibly-cool games I missed on that. This is one I never even heard about before it popped up on the Switch eshop, but I grabbed it not too long after it came out because it looked cool.

Let’s see if it’s good!

Kao the Kangaroo review

Kao the Kangaroo

Kao the Kangaroo

Kao the Kangaroo is one of the hundreds of Sonic rip-off characters that were a big thing basically from the Genesis to the PS2. It’s one I didn’t end up playing, and some of his games had weird releases. The second game in the series came out in Poland 2-3 years earlier than other regions, and the third one only saw a very limited Europe/Australia release, but again only some time after its Polish release. The games look fine though, I just never ended up playing any of them.

But because I’m looking for stuff to play (and Epic Game Store has 25% off almost everything right now so that reduced the price of an already cheap game), I figured I’d pick it up. So let’s see if this is good!

Gotta Protectors: Cart of Darkness review

Gotta Protectors: Cart of Darkness

Gotta Protectors: Cart of Darkness

Okay I took a while to finally review this, but here we go!

I haven’t played Gotta Protectors on 3DS, but this isn’t my first tango with this series. My first time was playing a free NES rom some years ago called Amazon’s Running Diet, an infinite runner kind of game where the Amazon character needs to run to lose weight, but also avoid cake while running. Limited Run Games released a cartridge version of it, which they censored because they’re losers.

So anyways, I picked this up on launch, having previously no idea it existed and not listing it in the April release post. Let’s talk about it now that I took over a month to finish it!

Eiyuden Chronicle: Rising review

Eiyuden Chronicle: Rising

Eiyuden Chronicle: Rising

Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes was a successful Kickstarter (so far), with that game coming out next year. It’s interesting, being a Suikoden-inspired RPG (and I think some of the original Suikoden devs are part of the team) with, as the title says, at least a hundred characters you can use to build your party. Looks cool.

Rising is a prequel to that game, which, I presume, features a few of the characters and a very small look at the world of the final game. This one is an action RPG instead.

So… yeah, let’s review this!

Seven Pirates H review

Seven Pirates H

Seven Pirates H

This is the fourth game in the Genkai Tokki series. You may not be familiar, partly because those were never released under that name in America, though they did see a release. Monster Monpiece is one of them (and a bit of a meh game), but Moero Chronicles and Moero Crystal H are both pretty fun first-person grid-based dungeon-crawling RPGs. What they all have in common is… there’s lots of lewdness going on, from sexy character designs to monster designs based on sex toys or breasts… Yeah, they’re all a bit weird.

And, speaking of being weird, this one is probably weirder than the others. I figured that was why it never saw a US release back when it came out on the Vita, and that it would die as a Japan-exclusive. This game is gonna be a bit odd to review because it may sound like I’m making things up, but I swear I’m not. This is a real game that exists.

Well… let’s try to review this.
