SteamWorld Quest: Hand of Gilgamech review

SteamWorld Quest: Hand of Gilgamech

SteamWorld Quest: Hand of Gilgamech

This was in the recent Humble Bundle. I picked up the bundle mostly for this, and also Neoverse which… I don’t think I’ll end up playing anywhere near enough of to review.

It’s a card-based RPG in the SteamWorld Universe. Not a universe I’m super familiar with, the only other SteamWorld game I’ve played is Dig 2, which was pretty good. This is a bit of an older game, but I do try to review everything I play. I like going back and trying things I missed from time to time, so here’s one that’s been on the wishlist for a while.

Not much else to talk about in the intro, so let’s go!

I don’t want to play any more Outriders

I was interested in this game when it was announced. Pretty simple reason: it’s made by People Can Fly, the same people that made Painkiller and Bulletstorm. So they have a pretty good track record for great games, Bulletstorm being one of my favorite non-DOOM FPS games.

But quickly red flags were showing up for this game. It just… looked strange. It finally ended up getting a demo. That demo… removed all possible hype for me. But I did notice some people saying it was good, and it’s possible that I just chose a character class that’s not fun to play. So with the current Epic Game Store sale and the constant 10$ coupon during the duration of the sale, this ended up being half-price. So I figured on friday that I’d grab it and it’d be my long-weekend game (it was Victoria Day weekend in Canada). And boy do I feel like I wasted my time.

Let’s go and talk about why! No, this is not a review because I’m not done with it, and I don’t want to play any more of it. If you want to treat this as a review go right ahead because this is the closest I’ll get to it.

Games coming out in June 2021

disgaea 6

Got a few reviews posted in May, and I actually have 2 more that I’m writing right now and a few games that I’m playing as well that I’ll review… not counting all the stuff I’m getting in June. Things are going pretty great writing-wise.

So June is E3 month, and E3 isn’t being skipped this year. I already talked about how weird it is for E3 to exist anymore. I have basically no excitement for E3 or its weird app thing. But hey, there could be some fun announcements. So there’s possible hype there, maybe. I prefer to go in with zero expectations.

Other than E3, June is a pretty exciting month games-wise this year, surprisingly. I’m buying at least 7 new games, with still a few “maybe” games too. It’s actually pretty crazy. So in June we’re gonna be seeing: 11 multiplats, 6 Switch releases, 3 PS5 releases and 3 PC releases. There’s some really cool stuff here.

Let’s go!

Disclaimer: I only list games that I think are worth mentioning. This includes games I’m personally interested in, games that will likely be popular, highly advertised games, small interesting ones I may notice and such. Not just games I care about myself, I highlight as much as I think makes sense. And of course I can’t see the future, so I may be missing games and I may be listing games that may get delayed.

Moon Raider review

This is a game I knew basically nothing about until a bit before it came out on Switch/PS4/Xbone. It was a bit of a random buy on my side, and it ended up being a decent pickup for just before Famicom Detective Club came out. I never even noticed it on PC when it came out last year.

It looked pretty fun, so I figure I’d grab it… in-between like 6 other games… so it took a backseat and I’m only able to review it now. Let’s go!

Smelter review

Smelter

I saw a trailer for this about a month before it came out, and this looked really interesting. The gameplay looked to have some heavy Actraiser vibes, with it being a platformer, but having some form of RTS-ish gameplay too. So I was really excited to give this one a try.

Not much else to say for an intro, so let’s jump into it!

SaGa Frontier Remastered impressions

SaGa Frontier Remastered

This is not a full review, because I don’t think I’m in any position to actually review this. I only did 2 of the 8 stories, and I don’t feel like playing through more of it right now. That said, I still wanna talk about it. So I’m writing this as an impressions post, since I can’t review it.

I’ve been enjoying me some SaGa recently. The SaGa collection on Switch of the old Game Boy games is really fun (SaGa 2 being my favorite of that bunch), and I also semi-recently played through SaGa Scarlet Grace and I really enjoyed that game’s combat and overall weird mechanics.

Anyways, let’s talk about this one quickly.

NieR Replicant™ ver.1.22474487139… review

Nier Replicant ver.1.22474487139...

NieR Replicant™ ver.1.22474487139...

I tried NieR back on the Xbox 360. Here in America we only got NieR Gestalt, while Japan got both Gestalt and Replicant (which seem fairly identical, minus the character being older in Gestalt… I’m sure there’s other differences). I played it for a very short amount of time and gave up pretty quick, it didn’t click with me at the time. But since then I did play NieR Automata, and that’s one I quite enjoyed.

I figured because I really liked Automata and that this was coming out, I might as well give it another chance. So I played it through and… well, here’s the review.

So let’s go and try to review this maybe. I dunno.

Famicom Detective Club™: The Girl Who Stands Behind

6 reviews in a month, not bad. There’s been some okay stuff here, some GotY-level stuff too.

I do have a bunch of reviews incoming too. SaGa Frontier Remastered, Nier Replicant, Smelter, and a bunch of other stuff probably. I think I’ll be busy with reviews for a bit still, I’m really not running out of games to play that’s for sure. Plus MHR is coming back for more with the 2.0 update.

So anyways, this month I’m highlighting: 7 multiplats, 4 Switch releases, a PC release and a PS5 port of an old Switch game. It’s a pretty quiet month but there’s certainly some interesting games there. It’s the calm before the June storm.

Disclaimer: I only list games that I think are worth mentioning. This includes games I’m personally interested in, games that will likely be popular, highly advertised games, small interesting ones I may notice and such. And of course I can’t see the future, so I may be missing games and I may be listing games that may get delayed.

Neptunia Virtual Stars review

neptunia virtual stars

Neptunia Virtual Stars
Do you like Neptunia? Do you like Vtubers? Well boy do I have a game for you… maybe. The Neptunia series is known for its referential humor based on anime and the game industry (sometimes even being a bit funny), I guess it was only a matter of time before it jumped on the Vtuber craze. That might be a recent thing here (I have been watching Vtubers for a while but it’s only last year that I really got into it), but they have been blowing up in japan long before, so it makes sense.

Not really much to say here. Let’s just talk about this game.

Kaze and the Wild Masks review

Kaze and the Wild Masks

When I saw screenshots for this game, I thought it was gonna be a Klonoa-inspired platformer. But a quick look at a gameplay trailer showed the truth: this is a DKC-inspired game. That got my attention way more. So I picked it up. Yay.

Let’s go and see if this DKC-like is the good stuff.
