Had a few more posts this month because of the not-E3 stuff. I also planned on mini-reviews for Bat Boy and Boltgun but I’m not too sure about even doing that. They’re okay games but I feel like not much to talk about that you can’t get from watching the trailers. Also I’m playing the new Star Wars Jedi thing, I’ll probably be reviewing that, if only to complain about the PC version.
July 2023… Has a couple things. Only a few are actually big, but there’s stuff here that will be good. Here I’m highlighting: 12 multiplatform games, 3 Switch games and 2 PC games. I might actually be buying some of these. I’d say 2 of them are “for sure at launch”, and I’d say 3 or 4 maybes. Not a bad month.
Disclaimer: I only list games that I think are worth mentioning. This includes games I’m personally interested in, games that will likely be popular, highly advertised games, some more niche stuff I may notice, and such. Not just games I care about myself, I highlight as much as I think makes sense. And of course, I can’t see the future, so I may be missing games and I may be listing games that may get delayed.
MULTIPLATFORM RELEASES
Gimmick! Special Edition 07/06 (Switch, PC)
Gimmick is a badass NES game that never got a proper western release. I do have a cartridge version of it that I think I got from retrousb back in the day (or some other repro cart company). This game does some pretty crazy things with the hardware of the NES, is super fun to play, has great music and looks amazing. Definitely worth checking out if you haven’t before.
Gylt 07/06 (PC, PS4, Xbone, PS5, Xbox X/S)
This was a Stadia exclusive game that is finally coming out to real platforms that actually exist. The game itself… Looks kinda okay I guess. It’s a horror-themed puzzle game from the few gameplay vids I looked at. Nice for people that wanted it but didn’t want to waste money or time on Stadia.
The Legend of Heroes: Trails into Reverie 07/07 (Switch, PC, PS4, PS5)
Well as usual this is a Trails game, and I never jumped into the series early on and I’m worried about jumping into the series without previous knowledge, so as usual I’ll skip it. I’m sure it’ll be good. I’m also sure I’ll see complaints about bad localization as several of the recent ones have gotten as well because “localizers” live to ruin good things.
Oxenfree II: Lost Signals 07/12 (Switch, PC, PS4, PS5)
“OXENFREE II: Lost Signals is coming to Nintendo Switch in 2021!” says the announcement trailer… Wonder what happened.
Well anyways… I have no idea what this is. I remember seeing the first one get named as a good game many times and I know people are excited for this… Some of the marketing I’ve seen for this was pretty confusing, in one show there was like an hour of music while looking at a triangle, strange.
Atelier Marie Remake: The Alchemist of Salburg 07/12 (Switch, PC, PS4, PS5)
This is a remake of the very first Atelier game, one that never came out in the west. In fact we got no Atelier at all in the west until the SIXTH one in the series, Atelier Iris. So yeah this is a pretty cool release. I have fewer problems with remakes and remasters when it’s games that never saw an international release, or are more niche things that didn’t get as much attention back in the day. And I’m definitely grabbing this.
Touhou: New World 07/13 (Switch, PC)
I don’t highlight Touhou a lot even though it gets a lot of games. I’m not super familiar with the series (I did play a lot of the classic shmups, but that’s about it as far as my knowledge of the series), but some of the games look pretty cool. This seems interesting enough, being a bullet hell action RPG. Probably won’t play it myself but it’s worth highlighting.
Exoprimal 07/14 (PC, PS4, Xbone, PS5, Xbox X/S)
This is Capcom trolling people who want a new Dino Crisis, instead giving them a shitty team-based online shooter.. with dinosaurs. I watched several videos of this and it just doesn’t look good, I dunno man.
Immortals of Aveum 07/20 (PC, PS5, Xbox X/S)
This is the first game from a company apparently comprised of people who worked on games such as Bioshock 2. I like it conceptually, it being a magic-based FPS that looks to have some interesting gameplay elements. I feel I’ll need to watch a review or two, but I think this looks like it might be okay.
Nobunaga’s Ambition: Awakening 07/20 (Switch, PC, PS4)
I’m not familiar with this series but it’s a classic strategy thing from all the way back in 1983. This is the sixteenth game in the series. It’s gotta be good if it keeps getting sequels *laughs in Call of Duty*.
Remnant 2 07/25 (PC, PS5, Xbox X/S)
The first Remnant was pretty cool. I didn’t get THAT far into it but I had fun with it. It’s a “souls”-like third-person shooter with loot and stuff. I haven’t looked at all into what the sequel will be like, but I assume more of the same based on the roughly 10 seconds of gameplay I’ve seen. I’ll get it when the Epic Game Store gives it out for free.
Double Dragon Gaiden: Rise of the Dragons 07/27 (Switch, PC, PS4, Xbone, PS5, Xbox X/S)
This is a new Double Dragon with a kinda-strange chibi-ish visual style, and it’s a roguelite somehow… Actually looks kinda cool. Seems a bit different from previous games in the series. I’ll probably check it out.
Rise of the Triad: Ludicrous Edition 07/31 (Switch, PC, PS4, Xbone, PS5, Xbox X/S)
Rise of the Triad is a classic FPS that I actually missed back in the day. It was well known for its extreme violence and gore. Looks pretty cool, seems this version restores some lost content and stuff.
SWITCH RELEASES
Pikmin 4 07/21
Pikmin is a great series. Each of the games in it have been really good. This seems to take everything that was good in previous games, and just adds more and more shit. You can now explore the world during the night, there’s multiplayer VS shit and more strategic options, there’s custom characters, there’s a cute doggo, new interesting locales like inside a house… This takes Pikmin and goes into overdrive. Looks fucking fantastic.
Hogwarts Legacy 07/25
There is it, it’s finally out on all the platforms. TBH I’ve not been convinced this is particularly amazing, and if I were to get it, it wouldn’t be on Switch because I’d rather get a version with good performance.
Disney Illusion Island 07/28
Yeah this looks pretty bad. The platforming is floaty as fuck and slow and everything I’ve seen from trailers/previews does not look fun at all.
PC RELEASES
Jagged Alliance 3 07/14
This is a series I know basically nothing about. It’s been going since 1995 and has a weird amount of games considering this is only number 3 (some of which are remakes, some of which… maybe spin-offs?). It’s something of a competitor to the Xcom series, being a similar type of strategy game… Looks pretty okay from what I’ve seen.
Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart 07/26
The one reason that used to exist for getting a PS5 is now on PC. I guess not buying a PS5 was just the right choice. Yeah I’m getting this game that is TOTALLY IMPOSSIBLE ON ANY HARDWARE OTHER THAN THE PS5. Remember that statement and fanboy talking point? Anyways… yeah this game looks solid, I will probably review it finally.
